Another School Shooting and the Death Toll Rises

The shootings in schools are starting to be outrageous. What country, state, or town is going to experience someone walking onto a school campus and taking a human life next? Thankfully militants cannot get onto an airplane where the training is to expect the un-expected, but they can walk into any school in the world and have target practice.

Not that I am against guns, but the last two school shootings hopefully are not going to started a trend for the 2006-2007 school season. There is a turkey season, a deer season, a bow season, a shotgun season and at this pace school season. Ok so I am hoping that that is a little drastic, but the school year is still very young.

So what can now be done to curb some of these shootings, anything from school lockdowns to a battle with the National Rife Association (NRA) and gun laws. The right to bear arms was put into the Bill of Rights at a time when individuals could not go to the corner store, the general store, or your favorite 24-hour grocery to get food to feed their families. As well as a time when outlaws were more prevalent and not as controlled.

In the second Amendment it says, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Individuals walking around with guns whether registered or not, are not part of any regulated militia which in New York State, is the New York Guard. I am sure the NRA does well for the United States, but some rights need to be changed to protect our children.

As for the lockdown, many schools in the nation and in Western New York do have types of lockdown control. For example at Maple West Elementary in Williamsville, NY there is a keypad/doorbell that one must go to and be let in, to get into the school. With controls like that, a rogue stranger cannot make an easy entrance into the school to invoke harm on anyone.
