Whether you are seeing a theater production for the first time or you are a seasoned pro here are eight simple things everyone should remember the next time you buy a ticket.1) Experiment
Let's face it, there is a LOT of theater out there. In a major city on any given night you are bound to find Shakespeare, Modern Romantic Comedies, Experimental, Kitchen Sink Dramas, Period Plays, Political Plays, New Scripts and so much more! Don't get into a rut with the type and tone of theater you go to see. Experiment and see what you love!
2) Research
Research is a great way to start. Look at local newspapers for reviews, the theaters website and ask friends. Most newspapers have theater listings with an accompanying brief synopsis for every show playing, read up on them.
3) Discounted Tickets
Most theaters offer discounted tickets for off nights or through special promotions. Others have 'rush' tickets that allow you to buy deeply discounted tickets that haven't sold thirty minutes or so before curtain. Most larger cities have programs or website that list all the discounted or half price tickets available across the city, this is a great resource.
And if you don't mind working for your ticket a lot of larger houses have volunteer usher programs where you hand out programs to patrons before the show and then are able to see the show for free. It's barely any work and no long term commitment and you save a bundle!
If you think you can't afford to go check out some of these specials first.
4) Discount Partners
Plenty of theaters team up with local restaurants to provide patrons with discounts for meals before or after the show. Inquire with the theaters box office or website for such deals. Before the show take a look through your program for addition merchant offering deals.
