Young children, especially toddlers can be unaware of how gentle that you need to be with a book. There are lots of ways that you can keep your children's books looking nice so that they will last for many generations of readers. It is a good idea to give age appropriate books to toddlers, board books and cloth books. Turning the pages of paperback books can be difficult for a toddler and too easily can a toddler accidentally rip a page in the process. If you find that your toddler, something that may flare up when they are teething, likes to chew on their board books and is destroying them, then you will want to stick to cloth books, of course when choosing a book made of fabric make sure that you choose natural fibers and avoid anything synthetic.
For younger children that are able to look at paperback books there are a few things that you can encourage them to do to ensure that the books stay in nice condition. When you choose the storage method of your child's books make sure that it is something that your child can manage while at the same time is something that will not be harmful to the books. A quick solution to putting books away may be a to have them in a box but too easily as books are quickly being set in the box can they and become bent. A tight bookshelf can be hard to reinsert books carefully, especially if a little one is in a hurry to clean up their room.
One solution can be to have less packed shelves of books and to have a rule that no more than a certain number of books can be removed from the shelf before they have to be put back. Usually children don't need to be looking at more than a couple of books at a time and this way if your child pulls five books off of the shelf before they can pull another one off they have to put one back, this way you don't worry about too many books being off the shelf and the chance books will be getting tucked under a bed, behind a chair or accidentally stepped on.
By keeping the children's books nice you will be able to enjoy them for all of the children that you have and pass them on to your children's children, or donate them when your children have grown out of them.
