With his rendition of Queen's "We Are The Champions," Michael Johns left no doubt that he is not our American Idol. In fact, he's not even American! Isn't that in the rules somewhere? This Australian, we learned from the opening biographical clip, is a Libra, born in 1978.

The top ten contestants, this week, chose songs to perform from their birth year. Unfortunately, most of the hopefuls were born in the late 1980's not lending to a huge variety of choices in the pop world. Mr. Johns' selection of a classic rock tune beautifully belted out in the original version by Freddie Mercury proved ultimately to be his undoing.

Taking the stage - looking frankly, absolutely stunning and, yes, very hot - Mr. Johns began screaming out the lyrics as if a teenager at a pep rally. Sadly as the song progressed to a slower pace it didn't get any better and this viewer began to reach for her Ipod yearning to hear a perfectly pitched Freddie singing smoothly into her ear.

Painstakingly, Mr. Johns continued. Beginning the chorus, the high notes fell flat and it became quite clear that he is no Freddie Mercury. Choosing a ballad so iconic and forever associated with Queen was ultimately his undoing. I was hoping that it would soon be over and was quite relieved that Mr. Johns' version was far shorter than the much-loved original.

It was unbelievable how the judges were united in their assessment of his performance, each giving it glowing remarks ranging from "best performance" by Randy (prefaced with a "Yo"), "your moment" from Paula, and finally Simon quipped that Mr. Johns has "star potential". This reviewer would beg to differ. Maybe Mr. Johns should continue his pursuit of tennis or possibly reconsider the whole mascot gig.

Way to go Wendy. Some people don't know what "review" means. Opinions are opinions. Reviewers don't get famous regurgitating the same trite phrases as everyone else. My George Michael review provoked a furor as well, and like you, I found it quite amusing. I was even told by someone that people like me are why they regret freedom of speech!

This article is pointless

I love that people get so fired up and feel compelled to vent their frustration, likes and dislikes in sometimes a positive and sometimes a hurtful way. This was my first foray into online publication and I'm amused that my article has ellicited such reaction. Although, I've resisted, I can't sit idly by and read people tear me apart. For starters, I don't generally watch American Idol and simply was offering my review of one performance by someone I'd never seen before. It was my mistake that sarcasm doesn't come across well in written prose and I meant no reference that could be considered bigoted. However, just by marrying an American does not make you one. There is a process involving a few steps that you have to follow after marrying an American. Truly I admire anyone with enough guts to give it their all in front of millions of people and encourage the process, American or not.

Wendy Pickett: Refrain from making ignorant statements like "Michael Johns should not be American Idol because he is not even American" if you want your article to be taken seriously. Anyone who is an American citizen can compete for the title of American idol. Legally, if you are married to an American you are automatically an American citizen, and he is already married to an American. More importantly, he has not only lived his whole adult life in the US, but he also believes in equal opportunity and hard work, which are core American ideals.

Why don't you get the fact that even though Michael will never sing like Freddie...duh, he's not supposed to..he's supposed to be himself but Other than Freddie Mercury that was possibly the best rendition of several Queen's songs. Not many people can sing like that and pull it off. He's obviously incredibly talented and he's bringing Queen to the attention of a whole new generation. Also, who cares if he was born in Australia..he lives here now..he's married to an American..that's an American the last time I checked. How are you allowed to write a blog Ms. Pickett? Your clearly bigoted views have no place in today's society. You're a total idiot.

Hey he's right (in a way) because when I heard him singing it wasnt even close to Freddie. I didnt think it was that great at all. I wish people would stop trying to sing Queen songs. It just draws attention to the fact that Freddie is impossible to emulate

If it was in the rules then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have allowed him in the competition. Stupid.

Oh, wait. You get paid when people read these right. Yeah, you are just trying to stir up shit to get people to read. Fucking asshole.
