Gout is actually a form of arthritis. Not only that, gout is one of the most common forms of arthritis. Gout does not affect the whole body. It usually only affects one or two joints at a time. The joints most often affected are in the feet and ankles, and a portion of the big toe. The onset of gout is usually sudden and one will experience server pain and redness and swelling in the affected area may also be present. The attack may last for a couple of weeks with the first occurrence. Gout may not reoccur for months or even years after the fist attack. As subsequent attacks occur, they may be more intense, involve many joints, and occur with greater frequency. Ninety percent of all people who have a gout attack will have another one.

A chronic joint disease may develop from gout, which can lead to joint damage and a crippling disability. Gout affects more men than women until after a woman reaches menopause. After menopause gout is quit common in women.

When a build up of Uric Acid is present in the blood it is called hyperuricaemia. When this elevation is present, crystals may develop in the joints. The crystals cause inflammation, which is called gout. There are many causes for the build up of Uric Acid. Heredity can be one reason. Other reasons include, being overweight, the intake of large amounts of alcohol, certain foods, some high blood pressure medications, and kidney disease.

To reduce gout ones diet should be modified. Foods to avoid are as follows.
1) Limit the intake of red meats.
2) Limit the intake of shellfish, and scallops
3) Limit the intake of peas, and beans
4) Limit the intake of alcoholic beverages
5) High blood pressure medications may have to be adjusted.

Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed. Results are best when these drugs are started as soon as the first signs of gout appear. When treatment is started early, the condition may be under control within as little as 12-24 hours. Rest and the intake of plenty of water is important. One should drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day.
