Recently, I received an assignment to write a short how-to tutorial on walking a hamster.

Paralysis surrounded me. Walk a hamster!!??

First of all, I have never owned a hamster. I do not like rodents of any kind. Suffice to say, that had I known that Rocky the Squirrel was really a flying rodent - well, let's just say I would have chosen a different favorite superhero as a child!

But, like any good web writer, I resorted to Google and entered the words; walk a hamster.

465,000 hits as of March 25, 2008. YouTube videos, articles, websites, and reviews. All sweetly dedicated to the exercise known as walking a hamster.

Now, there are some things a hamster owner does need to know in order to walk their hamster. I will never have to use these little nuggets of knowledge because as I said before - I do not like rodents!

Did you know that there are little animal harnesses that can be placed onto a hamster in order to take an afternoon stroll? Me either. I guess you have to be pretty careful because sometimes the little critters get agitated when their owner tries to harness them. Biting has been known to occur. Pretty violent- those hamsters!

Did you know that you can also buy a little hamster collar and leash to walk your rodent..umm..I mean.. hamster. That's right! Most pet stores carry them, and if you can't find them at your friendly neighborhood Pets 'R Us, there is always the Internet.

Lastly, did you know, that the hamster may try to escape when you are trying to hook him up for his morning saunter? If he does this it could turn into quite an adventure. People sometimes fashion traps to catch the little munchkins when they rush off into the wild. Me? I would save on hamster food.

Anyway, these are just a few of the facts I unearthed while meandering through the Net accumulating information about walking a hamster. Who would have known that walking a hamster could be so exciting, so breathtaking and yes, apparently, so compelling to so many hamster owners?
