Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is a park owned by the city of Colorado Springs. It is a Registered National Natural Landmark and is located on Garden of the Gods road. It is a must see attraction for anyone who lives here or is visiting the area.

Garden of the Gods was once owned by Charles Elliott Perkins, but was given to the city of Colorado Springs at the time of his death in accordance with his wish of keeping the park open to the public and free for all.

Just outside the main entrance, sits the Garden of the Gods Welcome Center. It is in a rather large building, and signs will direct you up a flight of stairs. Upon entering the doors you find a theater that shows a twelve minute movie every thirty minutes. It costs two dollars, and is titled "How did those red rocks get here?" It is a very educational movie, and is the perfect prelude to the Gardens. Also you'll find a cafe/restaurant and an observation deck that both have a breathtaking view of both the Garden of the Gods as well as Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mountain (aka NORAD.) The building also houses a double level gift shop has a great selection of Colorado made gifts as well as souvenirs. You'll also find immaculately clean bathrooms.

After the welcome center you'll go to the park entrance, where you'll want to have your picture taken in front of the sign (everyone, including me, does) then you'll drive up about a hundred yards and you can park if the weather is cooperative. If not, you can certainly drive through. It takes some of the awe and wonder out of the experience, so definitely walk if at all possible.

If you decide to walk, (which is certainly what I recommend doing) get out your map from the welcome center (you did remember to grab one, right? if not, they're posted in various locations throughout the trails.) Make sure you wander throughout all the trails, and at a leisurely pace! You don't want to miss anything.

Thousands of people have carved their names into the rocks, but in an effort to preserve the natural quality of the rocks, you're asked to please refrain from such things.
