Ever since I started regularly watching this season of American Idol, the week we got to the top twenty-four, I have been watching David Archuleta closely. This young man has an incredible talent and has a lot of potential to move forward with his singing career. I picture as the next Josh Groban, singing ballads, perhaps performing in musicals or operas.

However, as the weeks move on, I'm beginning to think that David Archuleta is not American Idol material. While he did a fantastic job with Imagine, he seems to have little versatility. I have to hand it to him for trying upbeat, faster songs, but I can't help but be disappointed when he does.

Last night was week three of season seven of American Idol. David Archuleta sang "You're The Voice" by Australian artist John Farnham, which I'd never heard before this performance. I thought David did a decent job of it; his vocals were pretty good and he was having a lot of fun with it, which is important. I enjoyed it, but I didn't feel it was a stellar American Idol performance. He did not stretch his vocal ability or show just how good we all know his voice can be-he just didn't wow me.

When the season began, I thought David Archuleta was a sure-fire top contender for the American Idol title. However, while the weeks wear on and he continues to make bad song choices, he is moving further and further out of contention in my opinion. I think he will stick around for a while longer, most likely longer than Chikezie and Ramiele Malubay, but he will have a hard time keeping up with the likes of David Cook.

David is very young and has an incredible amount of talent for his age, but needs to become more versatile if he is going to win this season of American Idol. However, I am convinced that even if he goes home tonight, this will not be the last we see of David Archuleta.

Takeaways
  • David Archuleta's performance last night was OK, but not memorable.
  • David Archuleta most likely has a singing career ahead of him, but not as the next American Idol.

It is a long competition (over 14 weeks), you cannot be 'on' every week and then be expected to improve every week. One just hopes to not be the worst every week...that is what will keep you in the game.

yeah I really liked Archie in the beginning, but now he's getting a little boring and one dimensional.

You're absolutely right. feel the same way about David. I think he is talented, but needs to mature.

its crap

You say Archie is not Idol material as he is way too predictable and sings only one kind of genre..well what about your precious and beloved David Cook??! He's a rocker..He converts all his songs that he chooses into rock songs..it is the same thing week after week, the shouting, the screeching of the lyrics..all his performances are repititive in fact I turn down the volume when the guy comes up to sing..Face it, Archie has a pure voice, Cook has a gruffy voice and hey, my 2 year old niece started crying like crazy when Cook performed! Man! The lolk of horror on that child's face but immediately after Archie came on, she actually smiled and giggled! What a difference! Besides, I have been watching idol ever since the 1st season and believe me, Rockers Never Win. Period.

If David A. is not on the stage, I won't watch the American Idol. There is nothing very special to watch the show without David A.!

I think he is very talented and such a cute geniune kid and will end up in the finals, but i have a strong feeling that michael johns will be the winner, the black horse of the show!!!!!!

yeah he will with you idiots voting for him

As others mentioned, I don't see how you think David A. is any less versatile than the other contestants. David C.'s rock thing is getting old very quickly - and his cockiness is annoying as hell. Michael Johns took some risks with non-rock songs and may not have done well at times, but at least he shows that he can do different types of songs. David A. is definitely 'Idol' material and will sell very well, no doubt about it. All you have to do is look at iTunes and sort the AI performances by popularity. David A. is the only one consistently at the top. I did not care for the song choice last week *at first* but listening to the studio version really really changed my mind. He's an incredible singer and he's probably the only one who can pull off unknown songs and STILL be popular!

Things will change. Who knows if David Archuleta will steal the show next week? "You're the voice" was not David A's best performance but it's good enough to keep him staying for the next week.

While the live performance of 'Your're the voice' was clearly not as good as the studio one, at least David Archuleta takes risks so he doesn't become 'boring' or 'gloomy' as Simon pointed out. So I have no idea how David Cook is called 'original' when he does the same thing, week after week - rock. And it may sound good, but like someone said up there, I'd like to see him do a ballad without his guitar. Everyone has strengths, but playing those strengths comes later in the competition. Right now, David Archuleta has shown that he is versatile, while David Cook has not. There are only so many weeks of rock you can do before it starts to become repetative. Another thing I do not understand is why everyone thinks David Cook is so different. The way I see it, there are many many people out there like him, with just a good of a voice. Wheather they have a record contract or not, the rock/punk group is huge in the music industry! So I really dont know what makes David Cook so spec

He is amazing and he has the fanbase to sail him to the finals. and he will defiantly be in the final 2! his only competition is david cook.

I personally thought David Archuleta did a fantastic job with "You're the Voice". He has proven he can deliver on the up-beat songs (this week & Shop Around), in addition to truly excelling at the slower songs. Each contestant has their own area of strength and I don't see why this should make him any less "Idol material". It seems to me that just because he is the hot favourite, he has become the target of unduly harsh criticism (including from the AI judges). David A has an incredibly pure voice which touches the heart and I think that is far more "Idol material" than being a 'jack of all trades'. And at least he has the guts to take risks. I'd like to see David Cook do a ballad without his guitar. On an aside, I am getting rather annoyed at the feeble efforts to undermine David Archuleta's popularity on the show by not giving him a solo part in the group performances and only highlighting only the negative comments received on his song. The producers should realise, it's not
