I've always thought that, if you want to guarantee a good movie, you should focus on an established fairy tale genre. That's why, when the movie "Enchanted" came out, I thought it had potential. After finally watching it, all I can say is, it was cute.
Amy Adams plays Giselle, a young maiden who is set to marry Prince Edward (played by James Marsden) one day after he helps to rescue her from a troll. However, Edward's evil step mother pushes her into a well the day of their wedding and sends her to New York City. There, she befriends a divorce attorney, Robert (Patrick Dempsey), and his daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey).
Amy Adams actually does a good job with her role. Throughout the movie, she makes many subtle changes from a naïve young lady who thinks there's nothing but good in the world to accepting the fact bad things do happen.
And, there are some great moments in this film; including Giselle managing to get all of New York (or at least a good portion of it) to break out in a spontaneous song and dance number and her getting an army of pigeons, rats and roaches to help clean Robert's apartment. And, Susan Sarandon was amazing as Edward's step mother.
I also like the fact they make the fairy tale portions cartoons but use real people in New York.
However, overall, the movie really wasn't anything special. The plot was a bit weak at times and, you just know Giselle is going to eventually end up with Robert. While it never got boring, there also weren't many scenes that made you laugh your head off either.
On a scale from one to 10, I think I would give this movie a 6. It was cute. It wasn't great.
While you're at the movie store: I would recommend picking up the 2004 film Ella Enchanted. I actually liked this movie better than Enchanted because it is a great, unique fairy tale. Anne Hathaway does a wonderful job playing a young woman who (because of a spell) has to obey every command given to her. And, she turns out to be a pretty good singer too; especially with her rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love."
