During a White House press conference to respond to the latest book by Bob Woodward that suggests the White House is in a state of denial over the Iraq war - and it's interesting to note that the White House never denied what Bob Woodward wrote was the truth in his previous books about the administration, books that painted a shockingly positive portait of the President from the man who helped to expose the criminal wrongdoing of Pres. Richard Nixon - Tony Snow said "we know the insurgency [in Iraq] will never end."That's a pretty powerful statement. The word "never" carries a significant connotation of infinity with it. To say that the Bush administration believes that there will never be an end to the insurgency in Iraq is essentially to say that violence will be endemic to that country for a very significant amount of time. Certainly not an infinite amount, in all reality, but definitely decades at the very least.
Which raises an interesting question. If the Bush administration truly believes that the threat of insurgent attacks against US forces will be the rule of the day for longer than most of us can possibly imagine, then why is he content to keep them there? Clearly, there really can be no end to an insurgency in Iraq unless one of two possibilities occur. Either the US kills each and every Iraqi who may ever desire to join the insurgency, or we convince them to lay down arms and join together in a collective government.
Frankly, it's doubtful that Pres. Bush is actually holding his breath waiting for either of these possibilities to occur. If Tony Snow really is speaking for the President and the President really does believe that there is an infinite amount of time left before the insurgency is Iraq is contained, there can only be one outcome. The Bush administration has in place a plan to keep US troops in Iraq indefinitely.
