News has broke of yet another teacher arrested after being accused of sexual relations with a student. Heather Kennedy, a math teacher at Wantagh High School, is just the latest teacher arrested and under investigation in this disturbing trend. Police say that Kennedy and the boy had sex one week ago, on March 20. She was arrested Wednesday evening. Sadly, these cases are not unique or even rare, and are approaching the point where news breaks of the most recent example on a weekly basis. This has gone beyond a problem and has become a full blown pandemic.

Parents, concerned citizens, and high school administrators are all left wondering what can be done to reduce and eliminate these situations. The simple answer is there is no way these situations will stop as long as sexual predators continue to disguise themselves as teachers. Men and women are equally as guilty of seeking out minors and engaging them. While these recommendations must be followed there is no sure way to end this problem. In all actuality schools are fighting a near impossible battle.

The first step a school must take is to demand that background checks must be conducted on every employee, whether they have access to students or not. It is not enough to conduct these checks merely upon hiring, but employees must be checked on a yearly basis.

The second step schools must take is to contact multiple references of new prospective employee's. In a time and age when litigations are threatened and pursued on a daily basis, former employers are often times hesitant to speak on a candidate's negatives in fear of being sued. Here is where school legal departments need to be engaged in the process, and draft a list of questions which are revealing while not risking litigation for the person or company the school is contacting.

For a teacher you didn't read/comprehend very well. 1. 1st paragraph clearly points out she has been accused, not automatically guilty. 2. The fact the author stated "there is no way these situations will stop as long as sexual predators continue to disguise themselves as teachers" is a defense of good teachers. He is saying these people aren't worthy of the title respectable teachers have. 3. Where did he say teachers weren't trying? 4. Way to shift the blame to the "willing" students. That is like saying date rape is partially the victims fault because they were on a date. With teachers life you I wonder why our educational results keep decling in this country. Next time read and comprehend an article before writing a novel that doesn't make sense.

Dear Teacher, Do you seriously believe that news breaking every week of teachers and students having sex does not indicate a serious problem? Where in this article did the author say every teacher is going after students? He didn't. He pointed out the obvious problem. I'm going to go ahead and guess you are a card carrying member of the teachers union aren't you. It's obvious in the way your self righteous teachers do no wrong even though every week they are preying on students around the country comes off. Respectfully, Your Student

People are people. People can be stupid and selfish, and plenty of other negative traits. This is not an issue of teachers- this is an issue of people. I highly resent journalists pinning the blame not on troubled individuals, but on an entire group of extremely hard working people, the vast majority of whom are trying their very hardest to improve the lives of their students. In your prejudice and ignorance as a person whose opinions others look to, you do a disservice to your readers by making it seem as though this incident truly is indicative of a "pandemic" perpetrated on innocent students by a legion of predatory teachers.

You make the statement, "The simple answer is there is no way these situations will stop as long as sexual predators continue to disguise themselves as teachers." The simple answer is that there is no way these situations will stop as long as people are people. It is unfortunate that society has degraded to a point where individuals in positions of power (including teachers) are for whatever reason unable to control their urges, AND the fact that there seems to be a disturbing trend of students becoming more apathetic and resistant to authority in general, therefore blurring the boundary lines even more.

First off, do you honestly think that you are the first person to come up with these ideas? Schools do enact all sorts of safety measures, including background checks, requiring several personal references, fingerprinting and such. Teachers are always told not to be alone with a student, not to drive a student anywhere, etc. Secondly, Heather Kennedy has not yet been found guilty anywhere but in the media. There is a lot of speculation going about, including regarding the credibility of the "victim" (who by the way, was driving illegally.) Unfortunately for Ms. Kennedy, the media has already hung her and her career is over regardless of what the outcome of the case is. Third, and this is what I take most offense to, is the implications being made by many columnists, yourself included, that this "phenomenon" for lack of a better word, is a problem directly related to teachers. You make the statement, "The simple answer is there is no way these situations will stop as long as
