Troy Polamalu's Hair: Is it Subject for Debate?
Should the NFL make a rule stating that long hair cannot cover the name of the player on the back of his jersey? Is it really that big of a deal that they have to even talk about? Pittsburgh media says the last time Polamalu had a hair cut was 2002.
Shouldn't that be his choice? I think that this rule is going a little too far and why the Chiefs brought it up....only they will know.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/2008/03/27/2008-03-27_chiefs_propose_hairraizing_rule.html says this"It has not been determined that long hair has become a safety issue. But there is some concern around the league that it could be looked at as a racial and cultural issue, which is the last thing the NFL wants."
How is having long hair a racial or cultural issue?? Tons of people have longer hair these days. Rock stars always have and they have never been said to be racial for having long hair. Is the NFL going to tell people who they need to be or how they should act. Are they going to tell players they cant look like hippies out on the field? I just think this rule is something that the NFL should not have control over. Here are a few things about long hair and the NFL.
Number One
If anything it is hurting Polamalu and Harris because hair is allowed to be grabbed by players in the NFL (grab a lock of that and they will feel it in a game)
Number Two
It is a huge publicity statement for each of them. It's extremely easy to see Polamalu anywhere on the field because you see his hair. (want to be noticed? grow long hair)
Number Three
If people do consider that long hair is a racial or cultural issue then they just should not watch football. It's that easy.
Number Four
I think the NFL has a lot better things to talk about other than a hair policy. Maybe something about fingernail length or making sure the players brush their teeth before they go out and play a game.
Therefore: I do not this this rule is necessary at all. It should be the players choice if they get tackled by their hair or not and whether they want to be seen with long black curly locks.
