What makes Plan 9 so spectacularly infamous is that it was advertised as Bela Lugosi's last film despite the fact that the footage of Lugosi in the movie was actually filmed before the script was even written. And then, of course, there's also the fact that the Lugosi character in the movie was played by a chiropodist since Lugosi had died well before filming actually started.
Plan 9 is most certainly not the worst movie ever made. Face/Off, for instance, doesn't contain a single frame that is nearly as interesting, and I defy anyone to fall asleep during this movie as I did during all three Lord of the Rings snorefests. It's also a lot more fun to watch than most of today's special effects and car crash extravaganza. And, since it is a supernatural horror film, I guarantee you will be scared more often than you were during the The Grudge.
Plan 9 From Outer Space airs at 2:00 AM Eastern time on Turner Classic Movies on Friday, Oct. 13.
Trivia: Fox Mulder, of The X-Files, claimed to have watched Plan 9 From Outer Space 42 times.
