Diabulimia: A Frightening Phenomenon

Most of us know someone with diabetes these days. Sadly, most of us who don't have it are very ignorant of the dangers associated with both types. When a person has Type 1 Diabetes, taking insulin every single day for the rest of their lives is necessary to
stay alive. Since the pancreas no longer produces insulin, the shots of insulin help the glucose to get where it needs to be, and to keep blood sugar levels stable. If the sugar levels get too high, major damage can occur including damage to the eyesight, the heart and kidneys.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA):

Ketoacidosis is happens when when blood sugar levels become so high that the body itself starves for energy and sets about breaking down fat and muscle to keep functioning. Ketones are then produced and unleashed into the bloodstream causing this metabolic change known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Blurred vision, hot rushes, and a peculiar breath from the patient are signs of the metabolic change taking place. It must be treated immediately or the patient's brain can become swollen and they will ultimately lapse into a coma, and death is highly likely. Although I have referenced teenage girls in this article, Diabulimia can affect people of both genders, all ages, and it can triple the risk of death.

Thanks for this - I am working on an article about girls getting their sex education and ideal body images from Reality TV shows like "Make Me a Supermodel", where the girls were stick thin but were told they needed to lose more weight, and then put in all sorts of sexual photo situations with the male contestants. But I did not know about "diabulimia". Love the baby photo! Found you from a comment on Rodney's mako shark article.

This issue is from a complete lack of education and will power. Not your article, this epidemic of eating disorders and ketoacidosis. I LIVE in ketosis. I eat HIGH fat, and HIGH protein, and almost no carbs. I take dextrose immediately after working out to spike my insulin ever so slightly to get the protein into my muscles. I have lost weight, leveled my blood- sugar levels, lowered my cholesterol, lowered triglycerides, and haven't felt better. My body runs better on ketones. The difference is, I don't eat carbs. If people play with insulin to get into ketosis, but continue to eat like crap, they will suffer the consequences. I just wish more people would read REAL books, instead of doing what they saw on MTV. It's just sad.

I had heard about this a long time ago on a show about eating disorders and had forgotten all about it. Its so sad the lenths people will go to lose weight especially when their view is distorted.
