Aussie-Style Hamburger Recipe: A Burger with Everything On It
If you love hamburgers, try an Aussie "Hamburger with the lot." While meat pies and fish 'n' chips are a very popular take-away food, we also love our burgers. On cold, rainy days in winter when most of our farming would grind to a halt, and football was on TV, we'd draw straws to see who
got the job of placing hamburger orders with the local fish 'n' chip shop. Whoever was unlucky had to run out into the cold afternoon to pick them up before we all settled in for a few hands of cards. A fun time was had by all, although after such a huge burger most of us needed a long nap!
The following recipe is one you can make at home which is just as delicious. If you love hot Italian Salami, add a slice on top when putting your burger together. We used Calabrese Salami when we made our own, but a milder version is great too.
Ingredients:
Ground beef
White onions
Lettuce
Tomato
Cheese slices
Beetroot/Beet
Eggs
Bacon
Canned pineapple rings.
Mayonnaise
Tomato Sauce/Ketchup
Hamburger buns with sesame seed tops.
Hot Italian Salami(optional)
Lots of Napkins!
Make your burgers ahead of time when possible. The seasonings marry together much better when left covered in the fridge overnight. Like everything else, these burgers obviously taste best when cooked on the BBQ or even broiled, but pan frying is fine too.
-Mix together ground beef, Italian herbs, black pepper, pinch garlic powder, finely diced onion, 1tbs flour and 1 egg.
-Once the beef has been turned once and is cooked 3/4 of the way through, add bacon, onion and pineapple to the pan and cook until the bacon is crisp. The pineapple needs to be turned just once.
-When the bacon is cooked, lift it, and the onions out and place onto paper towels to drain excess fat. Leave the pineapple in the pan for now.
-Add the egg to the pan next and cover with a lid to allow the steam to cook the tops of the eggs. No turning is then necessary.
-Place your buns into the toaster or onto a clean hot grill now.
Assembling Your Hamburger:
-On the bottom bun, place a drizzle of ketchup first, followed by lettuce, beet, then a thick slice of tomato and more pepper.
