GlacierBayDVD rose to become one of eBay's top PowerSellers, achieving 268,198 unique feedback ratings and making $4.6 million in GMS (the value of items sold) in 2004. But something went terribly wrong, and in February 2006, GlacierBayDVD's status changed from PowerSeller to NARU (not a registered user).

Randy Smythe, owner of GlacierBayDVD, now wants to share his story. In a post on Associated Content (which he dramatically titled "What is the E! True Hollywood Story About EBay's Former Top Seller Glacier Bay DVD?"), Smythe explained why he decided to speak out now, 8 months after his company's demise. "I've been observing eBay over these past 8 months and I've come to the realization that they are a ship without a rudder, and it is affecting a group of people that I care a great deal about: EBay Sellers. So I thought I would lend my voice to the discussion. I have a unique perspective on eBay, and since I no longer sell online I can speak freely."

AuctionBytes interviewed GlacierBayDVD owner Randy Smythe this week to see what lessons could be learned from his journey to the top and subsequent plunge to bankruptcy. (Interview has been edited for length.)

AB:Give me some background on GlacierBayDVD - what did you sell, how many employees did you have, how long were you selling on eBay?
RS:
I sold DVDs and CDs, I had at the time I closed 6 employees, a 5,000 square foot warehouse and had been selling on eBay since 1999 and started the business in 2002.

AB:Were you using an auction-management software program?
RS:
I used AuctionRover, then ChannelAdvisor Pro. I was one of the first to use ChannelAdvisor Merchant.

AB: What was the effect of that on your business?
RS: It gave me so much more control, it allowed me to scale some aspects of my operation and it allowed me to grow probably faster than I could have at ChannelAdvisor Pro.

Takeaways
  • Our biggest cost on the P&L outside of our product costs was eBay.
  • I got into a new building, and I went from $300/month to $4,500/month, so that's a huge number
  • I believe my brand would have allowed me to continue to grow my sales.

When you get big too fast, you can fall just as fast.

That is so weird- the best month I ever had was also Feb. of 2004. That month was so incredible that I did a lot of the things that you talk about here. And I do agree that the half thing caused a lot of problems. I had listings on both, plus Amazon, and when they announced the end of half I cut prices to the bone. It would have taken more time to take all of the half listings off, get them all off the shelves, then get those relisted elsewhere, and I only had one employee to do listings. So, I slashed the prices so that the items would just sell out before the close and I wouldn't have to deal with them. THEN, after about half of that inventory sold, they announced that half wouldn't be closing after all. It was just unbelievable that they would pull that. My biz has never been what it was then and I guess never will be.

Looks like seller musicdogpd aka moviedogpd had met the same fate.

It played a small role. Mostly for the reason you spoke of. It creats a lack of trust in the Marketplace.

What role, if any, do the pervasive copies play on sellers in your category? Since I am a buyer, I know it impacted my willingness to use the site as a dvd source after being burned by pirates. I read your commentary and was surprised that this issue was not raised. Do you think that it played a role in your case?

Former Customer - I'm sorry for your trouble. I'm sure nothing I can say will make you feel any better. We went out of business. I walked away from a 5 year old "dream" business with nothing but debt. We shipped or refunded all Check and Money order payments, PayPal payments should have been disputed through PayPal and buySAFE handled any items not refunded through PayPal or by check. I honestly thought we had every customer covered. I am very sorry.

I just wanted to echo the comment that you took money when you knew that you were in trouble. This is clear when you check the dates when your negative feedback started to pile up against the dates that you stopped listing. And all of your sales were not covered by Buysafe. You are not telling the truth in that respect. I had purchases and some were declined as beyond the one month deadline. I lost money that was not compensated.

doppersauct - I'm sorry for the trouble you experienced. Each transaction was bonded by BuySafe.com and if you submitted a claim to them you should have received your money back. They sent several emails to each one of our customers and you had up to 30 days to file a claim. Sorry for the trouble. Randy Smythe

I purchased a DVD called "Barbarians at the Gate" from GlacierBayDVD (Randy Smythe) at the time his account was suspended and he took my money and I never received the item. It's no wonder he went out of business if he ripped off other people like he ripped off me. I got no response from my emails to him either.
