For someone with a love of Gardening, Winter never passes fast enough. For an early Spring starting your Vegetables and Flowers inside can be done as early as February. If you have a harsher Winter you might contemplate waiting until the middle or end of March. With March closing fast I can barely hold my excitement. The Weather outside in Kentucky is just not ready yet for anything other than a cold frame. However with Spring fast approaching, I have begun planting my seedlings now. With equal amounts of luck, skill and care I will have fresh seedlings to transplant for Spring.

Starting plants inside your home is actually a fairly easy process. When sprouting the seeds you need to follow instructions for success. Some seeds prefer no sunlight to sprout, some Seeds prefer light sunlight and then some Seeds need direct or artificial light to sprout. In any case a Seed will sprout more rapidly when you soak it overnight. What to soak it in overnight has techniques of its own. Some people claim soaking it in a weak Tea overnight will weaken the pod of the Seed due to the Tannin acid in the Tea. This actually turns out to be nearly impossible because Tea has no actual Tannin Acid in it. Some people use just water to soak their Seeds. The idea is to weaken the shell of the seed so it will sprout faster.

In some cases you can take a damp Paper Towel, place the seed in the fold and the Seed will sprout fine. In other cases you can soak the seed and place it in a plastic bag and seal it and this will sprout the seed. The fact is there are many methods to beginning your seeds. The idea behind it is proper amount of light depending on seed, and the proper moisture. What is left is the variable of how quickly your Seeds will sprout. Once your seed has began its germination you will put it in a container to grow your Seedling. At this time it is best to use a damp and lose potting soil. Often the store bought soil has certain nutrients in it that help the plant grow. As far as the containers, most often you will use organic pods or pots for easier transplants. The truth of the matter is you can use any medium, even Egg Cartons to start your Seedlings.
