Are Male American Idol Winners Doomed for Failure?
This season of American Idol (AI) is just beginning to heat up. With the wistful exit of crooner Chikezie Eze, audiences are wondering what kind of performer the world will select as its next pop sensation. Seasons past have proven some fairly interesting
things about the way the world thinks. Breaking certain stereotypical boundaries, some previous winners have gone on to enjoy wild success, while others still seem to be carving out their niche in the music world. What's interesting to note however, is that female American Idol winners appear to have achieved more national (and international) success than the show's male winners. Is there some set of subliminal criteria involved in the process of selecting the next pop champion? Or are the women themselves responsible for their own overwhelming achievements?
Season 1 Winner, Kelly Clarkson :HIT
The first season of American Idol found underdog Kelly Clarkson as the world's favorite pop singer. After her release from the Idol stage, she and Clive Davis went on to make beautiful music together-that is, until creative brushes caused a slight hiccup in the media. Still, Clarkson is riding high off of record sales and world tours. Also an Idol favorite was curlied cutie, Justin Guarini. He sailed through the competition wooing fans and Paula alike. But after Kelly's successful take-off, Justin faded quietly into the background, barely heard from again.
Season 2 Winner, Ruben Studdard : MISS
The world was proud that it could overlook certain stigmas regarding weight and race, as they ushered in the velvet teddy bear, Ruben Studdard to be the next American Idol. His silky stage presence, and lovable grin made him a crowd favorite. But for some reason, Studdard's transition into the world of R&B wasn't as smooth as his American Idol vocals. Could it have been the effects of poor marketing? Or was it merely difficult to find a place to squeeze Ruben (no pun intended) within the visually-obsessed music industry?
Season 3 Winner, Fantasia Barrino : HIT
