OPPO offers a great line of high quality and stylish DVD players and an HDMI switch concentrating their company's efforts toward quality and good looks for the A/V enthusiasts and consumers. The OPPO DV-980H is a great Up-Converting DVD player that plays not only commercial DVD's but homemade DivX and other formats for a universal DVD player.
One question that has arisen lately is quality of video especially when you start talking about HD and Blu-Ray but also with regular DVD quality and up-converting. DVD's we purchase for watching movies on and even ones we burn are at 420i resolution while the HD and Blu-Ray are at 1080p resolution when they are made. Up-Converting is taking that 480i resolution video we get on our regular DVD's and scaling it up to the larger resolution of 720p or even 1080p.
The resolutions and 480i, 720i, 1080i and 1080p are terms that people use when talking about resolution and quality of video for high definition television. The smaller size we are used to in the past of our standard CRT televisions was at the most a screen size of 720x480 pixels. A new generation HDTV has a screen resolution of at least 1280x720 or 720p screen resolution.
Pixels are those smallest squares that make up the picture on the screens of our television. Each square can be a different color and this amounts to the picture we see on our television. Just like a picture from a digital camera any image we see on our television when you look close enough is actually separate colored squares that make up the overall picture.
The 480i is the screen size of 720x480 pixels and means we have a total of 345,600 pixels on the screen. When we go to higher sizes of a resolution we have more pixels or for the 720p size we have 1280x720 pixels for a total of 786,432 pixels. The highest resolution of 1080p has 1920x1080 resolution for a total of 2,073,600 pixels on screen.
