An Irish "session" is a gathering of musicians (often taking place in a public venue) for the purpose of playing music together. Most sessions are very informal events, often taking place in a local pub. Sessions usually provide some of the best Irish music you will ever hear. The musicians sit around in a circle in a relaxed atmosphere and just play away. If you live in Ireland you’ll have no trouble finding a session, but if you live in New York like I do finding one can be a difficult task. Of all the hundreds of Irish pubs in New York City only a handful have sessions. But here is a list of the bars that I have found in New York City that have regular sessions. So if you are in the neighborhood, grab a pint of Guinness and sit back and listen to some great music. I guarantee you’ll leave saying that was some great craic (That’s Irish for a good time). There is no cover charge at any of these places and most of these sessions are open to anyone who wants to play – provided you know how of course. So you may want to inquire before hand and bring your tin whistle bodhrain or fiddle and join in the fun.Just a word of caution, most of these places fill up fast, so you want to get there early to secure a good spot and don’t be afraid to bring your dancing shoes.
