When Scientology is argued, critics and Scientologists alike spew facts at each other so much that it gets repetitive after a while. I am not condemning the process, because I have done so before and I believe that it will help the argument to continue to use the same process. However, I do not wish to use this article to spew facts, and I will simply tell what I think about Scientology and the Church of Scientology.

First off, maybe some background about me is in order. I am a college student and learned about Scientology on the Internet. I have no expertise in any subject, and don't pretend to be in any way. I will simply state what I think from now on.

Scientology can be considered a religion. It fits many criteria for a religion. It also fits many criteria for a cult. Given the numbers of Scientology, however, I do not think it is right to call it a cult, because in my mind the biggest characteristic of a cult is that it is limited to few people. Scientology has been recognized as a religion, and I think that it has a right to act as one. After all, it gives a person morals to live by and a sacred story.

I have never met any Scientologists, and I have never been one, but I can say with out a doubt that most Scientologists are good people. They all seem to be looking for the same thing, looking for answers in a vague and often confusing world. I don't want to stop them from pursuing something that they think could provide answers.

I live my life, however, believing that no matter what answer you get, you will find more questions due to the vast diversity of the world. Kind of like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, where the answer to the life, universe and everything is answered, only to find that the question to the answer isn't known. For those of you who don't know the answer, it's 42.

Sorry about the unrelated tangent. I do that sometimes, and I apologize if I do so again.

Takeaways
  • Scientology its self is not evil
  • The Church of Scientology is evil
  • L. Ron Hubbard was a liar
Did You Know?
Scientology reports that it is the fastest growing religion in the world. However, according to privately owned statistics, it is decreasing in membership.

Check out how Scientlogists help http://www.afterthetsunami.org/ http://www.scientology-tampa.org/community/index.html http://www.scientologytoday.org/press/611291915441_scn-vm.html http://www.drugfreeworld.org/ http://www.scientologytoday.org/press/611151625031_scn-local.html Scientologist help all over the world. They volunteer their time and efforts. And someday (no matter how you attack it) Scientology will be big enough to take on issues as big as the homeless. Today they fight the causes of drug addiction with education and help people all over the world with their VM programs which by the way does bring food, water and shelter to those in need. Indivdual Scientologist are also members of other groups and contribute to many various groups from The World Wildlife Federation to One.com. You "scare" people like Anonycritic to not even looking or looking at sites which prevert the truth to make it all look deadly or silly.

What you don't understand is most critics feel speaking out against the bad actions of scienotlogy is helping people. We do agree on one.com. I have been a member for some time now. And yep I reach out to the homeless and those who can't for themselfs. This is a very small part of my life but I think its importent enough to keep coming back to. Just as I know you feel the same. Remember its not the members of scientology, its the actions. In the long run the only ones who can save scientology is the members. May I ask what scientology is doing to help in the Sudan? Or for the homeless? Do they have a soup kichen or shelter in Clearwater or any other town? Or just how are they helping drug addicts? Do they have free clinic's set up?

Nick, how can you "think" about Scientology when you admit to having just the data on the internet as your source. Like concerned Individual who doesn't mention that Scientology has regained it charitable status in the UK or the fact that China doesn't recognize many religions so why would it recognize Scientology? There are many countries in the world that religious freedom is not a option. I can tell that you have come to believe that it should be your mission to do away with the BIG BAD SCIENTOLOGIST but take a look at the world around you. You could use your time and energy to help others. Find a good cause god knows there are the hungrey, the homeless, the drug addicted, children and adults who can not read and countries like Sudan whose people are being killed. Join one.com or any cause that you can do something to help. Best

Awww Ellen, you give me far to much credit. I have to say, listing a hate site like RFW does not help you much. Can you find one person listed there that is a critic of ANY religion other than scientology? I have read hubbards books also. I have also read books about hubbard. I think everyone should read both sides and thats what I always say. Whats wrong with that? Shouldn't people see both sides here?

CBS is doing a great story on scientoloogy this Sunday, Oct, 29 Check your local listings for the time. If you miss it try xenutv.com for it after a few days.

Anonycritic: you aren't pathetic, the Church of Scientology is. I wasn't sure that I was completely clear about that, sorry.

To: Anonyctritic You can still post about Scientology under a pseudonym, and voice your opinions with out fear of the Church of Scientology. I don't blame you, I blame the Church, but I find it despicable when a person is afraid to speak his mind. One of the founding principles of this country is the right of free speech, and one of the reasons why I wrote this article is because of the efforts of the Church of Scientology to scare away people. I find it pathetic.

Hey, its very ok that you don't post. I understand the fear and there is very good reason for it. But you can still play a big part, just in a different way. You can make a difference just by telling your friends about scientology and the xenu websites. You have already made a difference just by knowing about it yourself.

I've learned about Scientology the same way the author has, but there is one huge difference between the author and I. I'm scared to death of Scientology and absolutely refuse (most of the time) to post anything negative about it online. I've seen how they rabidly go after critics, and I have absolutely no desire to have my personal and work life crumble around me just because I have a negative opinion of something that is just blatantly insane. Jerald, I've got to hand it to you. You've been one of the more sane voices I've seen in the critics group, and your counter-arguments are exactly why you don't see Scientologists posting here. To the non-cowardly critics, please keep up the good work! The rest of us are shuddering behind you invisibly, but you've got our support!

I think they have made such fools of themselfs on these board they were told not to post anymore. I will miss them.

Posted on 10/05/2006 at 11:10:00 PM

Wow, no Scientologists have posted yet. I probably scared them off with my individualistic attitude towards the dogma of Scientology. Too Bad

his life history very much gives me the opinion that he was an utter fraud, a conman. I think it is possible to be critical of scientology itself without being a bigot or a religious persecuter. I certainly inform friends and family not just of the Church but of LRH and his teachings as well, but the protesting is kept to the Church because more than following something I consider mindless dribble & a con, they are actually hurting and abusing people. And to give you 1 fact: Scientology was denied charitable status last in the UK in '99, and is not accepted as a religion in many countries worldwide.

I protest against the Church of Scientology, not scientologists, or scientology and most critics are the same. However, I do find there is some cross over when it comes to LRH and the 'tech' of scientology. However, critics again mainly protest the church but have further opinions when it comes to scientology itself. Fine you said you went to some of their websites and you think their beliefs make it a religious belief. However, I don't think Scientology is about having beliefs but taking part in the 'tech' and living by LRH's teachings, they always like to say it is an applied philosophy. Now again, no real problem. But LRH wrote some pretty awful stuff and many people, including experts, believe the tech is full of mind & social control. I don't think the crimes and abuses of the CofS is just some random far out actions from the Church; IMO their bad behaviour is a result of the teachings & policies of LRH. Now LRH is the other problem, his life history very muc

Let me add something. I think that Xenu and a lot of the writings of L. Ron Hubbard are completely bizzare. I don't think that all of the writings of L. Ron Hubbard contribute in a positive way to Scientology, and I often question his motives. However, people have a right to believe in it. Nazis and Satanists have rights, even though I highly disagree with both of them.
