When Scientology is argued, critics and Scientologists alike spew facts at each other so much that it gets repetitive after a while. I am not condemning the process, because I have done so before and I believe that it will help the argument to continue to use the same process. However, I do not wish to use this article to spew facts, and I will simply tell what I think about Scientology and the Church of Scientology.

First off, maybe some background about me is in order. I am a college student and learned about Scientology on the Internet. I have no expertise in any subject, and don't pretend to be in any way. I will simply state what I think from now on.

Scientology can be considered a religion. It fits many criteria for a religion. It also fits many criteria for a cult. Given the numbers of Scientology, however, I do not think it is right to call it a cult, because in my mind the biggest characteristic of a cult is that it is limited to few people. Scientology has been recognized as a religion, and I think that it has a right to act as one. After all, it gives a person morals to live by and a sacred story.

I have never met any Scientologists, and I have never been one, but I can say with out a doubt that most Scientologists are good people. They all seem to be looking for the same thing, looking for answers in a vague and often confusing world. I don't want to stop them from pursuing something that they think could provide answers.

I live my life, however, believing that no matter what answer you get, you will find more questions due to the vast diversity of the world. Kind of like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, where the answer to the life, universe and everything is answered, only to find that the question to the answer isn't known. For those of you who don't know the answer, it's 42.

Sorry about the unrelated tangent. I do that sometimes, and I apologize if I do so again.

Takeaways
  • I think Scientology is fine
  • I think the Church of Scientology isn't fine
  • I in no way condone religious persecution
Did You Know?
Scientology claims it is the fastest growing religion in the world with over 8 million members. In truth, there are around 100,000
