Homeschool Vs. Public School: Pros & Cons

Homeschooling is defined as when a child is schooled in the home by a parent or legal guardian. Homeschooling has been on the rise; sites like MSNBC.com state that is has risen up to 30 percent in four years, but is homeschooling right for your child? As a mother of 2 and a stay at home mom, I believe that it may be a right area to go for my children. With no upfront cost to any Department of Education or local school district. However, books & supplies can be costly.
Pros of Homeschooling vs. Public School
1. Parents can provide a secure education to their child without fear of guns or bomb threats.
2. Its great for religous people who feel that Public school education rarely discusses their beliefs and holidays.
3. You are still allowed to have your child attend classes like: Physical Education, Art, Music, Band at the local school without cost.
4. In Michigan, depending on how you file, you may receive grants towards purchase of books & supplies.
5. You are able to customize your child's education by his/her interest.
6. You can take a field trip at anytime without having to have parental consent.
Cons of Homeschooling vs. Public School
1. Unless you enroll your child in one of the allowed classes at the local school, your child may not learn to cope with his peers.
2. Cost of Supplies & books can range from $100 - $2,000 or more, depending on the child's level in school.
3. The rules and regulations laid down the state on what needs to be taught. In Michigan, you have to teach English, Science, Math Social studies, if your child is below Jr./Sr. Highschool.
4. Michigan gives you what to teach, but no lesson plans to teach by. You would need to research on your own.
As stated above, there are many pros & cons to homeschooling. Homeschooling seems to be on the rise, but at what cost to you as a parent? Otherwise, homeschooling has many benefits. If you decided to homeschool your child make sure you check with your State's Department of Education on how to get started.
