The term "conservation" has been used a lot by the media and by conservationists. However, conservation programs that we hear about usually focus on large mammals and apex predators. While these programs are important, large apex animals are not the only animals on the plane that are in danger of becoming extinct. In fact, there are several small creatures of the world that need our help as well, including the beautiful butterflies of Mount Fuiji, Japan.

Butterflies of Mount Fuji

On Japan's largest mountain, Mount Fuji, lives a population of some of the most beautiful butterflies in the world. Unfortunately, many butterfly species in this population are in danger of becoming extinct. This is because they are losing habitat to human developments. One of the endangered species is the Reverdin's blue, or the Lycaena arginommon. This species needs grasslands in order to propagate, however, with land so scarce in Japan, grasslands near Mount Fuji are quickly being replaced with housing and economic developments. Fortunately for these butterflies, Michihito Watanabe is spearheading a research project to help protect these small, beautiful and delicate creatures.

The Expedition

For eleven days, vacationers (research volunteers), will be taken to the grasslands near the foot of Mount Fuji. Here you will research the life cycle of the Reverdin's blue, from larvae to butterfly. You will also identify and chart food sources for the butterflies and record data. While most of your expedition will be spent in the field, you will have a day off to explore the area on your own. On this day you can visit local cultural sites, go shopping, or simply explore Mount Fuji on your own.

Signing Up for the Expedition

If you are interested in learning more about the butterflies of Mt. Fuji, then you will need to contact Earthwatch and request an application package. This package will tell you what forms you need to fill out, how to make your deposit, how much your expedition will cost and what travel arrangements you will need to make. Generally, only one expedition is held a year and only eight spots are available.
