There are hundreds of different vacation packages for the Bahamas. Some offer cruising on a luxury oceanliner, some offer snorkeling and diving, and others offer a leisurely beach experience. If you like these kinds of vacations then you have plenty of options to choose from. However, if you are looking for a Bahamas vacation that is more exciting, that is unique and that will bring you up close and personal with the area's local marine life, then the Earthwatch Dolphins and Whales of Abaco Island expedition is for you.

The Expedition

Charlotte Dunn and Diane Claridge are two scientists who are studying the marine life around Great Abaco Island, Bahamas. There research is looking at the biodiversity of the area, it is examining how the seasons impact which marine mammals are in the area, and they are also looking at how military sonar is impacting sonar sensitive animals like whales and dolphins.

What to Expect

If you join this expedition then you will meet up with a project liaison in Abaco Island, Bahamas. You will then be taken to the research headquarters, which consists of a large beach house, tents on the beach, a smaller beach house and research vessels. While food will be provided by the expedition, you will be required to pitch in with the cooking and cleaning. Your menu will consist of local produce and seafood, as well as a great selection of locally available foods like cereals and fixings for sandwiches.

There are a lot of activities that you can help with while on this expedition. Most of your time will be spent on the research vessel observing marine life. Your primary targets will be dolphins and whales. When you are not on the water you will be working in the lab. Lab assignments will include data entry and cataloging photographs of whales and dolphins. In addition to your research responsibilities, you will also have fun activities to choose from. During your recreation time you will be able to visit nearby national parks, go sea kayaking, go diving and just explore the Great Abaco Island.
