There are a lot of activities that you can take part in when on vacation in the Bahamas. You can go diving, snorkeling, you can take a cruise, or you can explore island life. However, if you are looking for a unique Bahamian adventure, then you will want to consider joining the Bahamian Reef Survey Expedition.

Bahamian Reef Survey

The Bahamian Reef Survey is a research expedition that is led by Dr. Garriet Smith, John Rollino and Thomas McGrath. This project has been in operation for over 14 years and has made some important discoveries. This research project is looking at how coral reefs are responding to numerous environmental factors like climate change, overfishing, and coastal development. Since the health of the marine ecosystem relies on the health of the coral, this project is very important.

What You Will Do

If you are a diver, or if you enjoy snorkeling, then you are going to have a blast on this expedition. One of your primary responsibilities will be to snorkel in the azur blue water off the cost of San Salvador Island, Bahamas and make notes about the coral structures that you observe. You will be looking for signs of coral bleaching, which is a fading of coral color, which indicates that the coral is being deprived of important nutrients. In addition to mapping and underwater data collection, you will also be taking water samples to test for ph levels and chemical make up. When you are working on land you will be examining coral formations in tidal pools and monitoring the beach profile.

On days that you are not in the field or the lab, you will be free to explore the Bahamas on your own. You can go scuba diving, you can explore caves, you can lounge around on the beach or you can go hiking.
