Madeline Island Vacation in Northern Wisconsin

Madeline Island is located at the uppermost point in Wisconsin just east of the Bayfield Peninsula in Lake Superior. Lake Superior is one of the Great Lakes that touch the northern part of Wisconsin. Madeline Island is the largest island that is part of the Apostle Islands. It is the largest Island of the Apostle islands with an acreage of about 14,000 acres.

To get to Madeline Island you can take a ferry that goes from Bayfield, Wisconsin to the town of La Pointe on Madeline Island. The ferry runs from the time the water opens in April till Lake Superior freezes over in January. The ferry will take you and your bike and even your vehicle safely over to Madeline Island. Bike riding around Madeline Island can be somewhat tricky if you go off of the main roads since the Island is covered in sand and the sand makes a bike hard to maneuver. Madeline Island has many flat areas that are easy to bike over yet you never get bored since the Island is so beautiful.

As you tour around Madeline Island you will see how the Island was logged off years ago. You can see old and new buildings on the Island. Pine trees cover much of the Island along with sugar maples and birch trees. Madeline Island has a special treat for anyone who can see it in the spring since the Island has blankets of wildflowers that bring the Island to life.

You can find Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island. Big Bay State Park offers camping for those of you who like to camp and being on an Island makes the camping even more exciting. Big Bay State Park is a great place to go to swimming or fishing on Lake Superior.
