How to Calculate the Greatest College Football Team Ever

Crunching the Gridiron Numbers

How do you figure out which college football team is the greatest to have ever played the game?

You'd have to consider wins and losses, of course. But 231 Division I college football teams have had undefeated and untied records going all the way back to Princeton in 1870. In the modern era (roughly since 1960) there
have been 53 undefeated football teams.

So, what else?

Quality of opposition. This is fairly easy. Just look at the schedules played by various undefeated teams. Tulane went 12-0 in 1998 but only played 3 teams with winning records, including BYU in its bowl game. Tennessee obviously had a much more difficult path to its perfect record that year and was justifiably crowned the National Champion. In 2004, undefeated Utah was similarly maligned by its unchallenging schedule despite that the Utes were, by all accounts, a formidable football team. They finished 4th in the polls that year behind two other unblemished squads and a once-beaten Oklahoma.

So then how do you separate undefeated teams who played comparably tough schedules?

Domination of opposition. In 2004 both USC and Auburn ran the table playing similarly high-quality opponents. Without playing each other directly, voters in the AP poll were left to determine who deserved to be number one. (The coaches poll was obligated to crown the BCS Championship game winner as champ.) The media overwhelmingly picked USC and all they had to do was look at the last game each team played. Auburn won a three-point squeaker in the Sugar Bowl over Virginia Tech, whilst the Trojans annihilated previously unbeaten Oklahoma 55-19.

I agree about 1972 USC being among the best. I just didn't have the wherewithal to do calculations back that far. 1971 Nebraska and 1972 USC both deserve to be in the discussion.

The 1972 USC Trojans is arguably the BEST college football team of all-time! Just ask Woody Hayes and millions of Ohioans what they think of the 1972 Trojans!

just shut up everybody everybody knows nebraska is the best team look at the graph and who cares if there not good in the NFL this is the best college team not the best college team to have the best NFL players so just shut your mouth all you miami fans

Although, it was mentioned in this article. I think something needs to be addressed further. 01 Miami struggled TERRIBLY to beat a 4 loss 01 VT team. Why is this important outsie of the 2 point victory for the Canes? I am not even bringing it up because of the 2 point victory. Go take a deeper look at the box score. I bring this up for one important reason. VT at the time ran a very very similar offense, and especially in the power running game to what Nebraska did for decades. 01 VT had success runnning the ball on your Canes to the tune of 37 carries for approx 160 yards. Over 4 yards a carry. VT Fr rb K. Jones ran for 130 + and you think A. Green, L. Phillips, Frazier and co aren't going to tear that Miami d up??!! Why is this important?? 01 VT did this with FAR FAR LESS talented athletes than what 95 NU would have thrown at the 01 Canes. 01 VT had 2, maybe three lineman make NFL teams and one, Jake Grove with any real success, two rb in Suggs and Jones with Jones having

'04 Virginia Tech, Stanford, Cal, Oregon State and UCLA are all equal to or better than every team from the 90s which, obviously, is ridiculous.

Eric, thanks for your thoughtful comments. Since publishing this 9 months ago, I've received a lot of feedback. You bring up a great point about beating teams late in the season. I'm not sure how to compensate for that without turning the formula into rocket science. But one criticism I do agree with (and which I plan to eventually make adjustments for) is that my formula favors high powered offenses over great defenses. I plan to recalibrate this later, which would actually benefit the '01 Miami team, I think. I do think '01 Miami is the most talented team of all time, but that's a different thing entirely from "greatest" team of all time. One is a measure of results, the other is a measure of potential. I disagree with your assessment (which I don't think you effectively argued for) that '01 Miami or '04 USC would beat any team from the '90s by two touchdowns. By claiming that, you are in essence saying that '01 Virginia Tech and Boston College and '04 Virginia Tech, Stanford

95' TEAM! you simply cannot compare that to: Jeremy Shockey, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Vince Wilfork, Jonathon Vilma, ED REED, Kellen Winslow, and Sean Taylor: who may he rest in peace had 2 pro bowls in 2 years before his death! This is even taking out the fact that Frazier had that clot in his leg...he was a great college QB...as Ken Dorsey of Miami was a great college QB but was not in the NFL...so you break even on that one! but seriously....you CANNOT compare these 2 teams and say Miami does not KILL the 95' NU team!

from the 90's! I think USC would beat that Miami team, but it would be very close....but whoever would win that game, would beat any of those 90's teams by at least 2 TD's! #3 and Last but not least by any means...you compared the 95' cornhuskers who went on to the nfl to those of the 2001 hurricanes who went on to the nfl...28 for miami and 27 for nebraska! But that is just how many WENT to the nfl...let me show you something here: Combined Pro-Bowls for that 2001 Miami team: 20 pro bowls...and its only been 6 years! Combined All Pro Selections for 2001 Miami team: 10 all pro selections! Rookies of the year for 2001 Miami team: 4 players! They also hold 2 NFL records with a guy named Ed Reed! Now look at that 95' cornhusker team in the nfl....total pro bowls and all pro's and rookies of the year and records: Ahman Green = 4 pro bowls, 2 all pro's, not rookie of the year, and no records. HE IS THE ONLY GUY WHO HAS WENT ON AND BEEN ABOVE AVERAGE IN THE NFL FROM THAT

Mark. Nice Article. That must have taken a long time to do all that research. I find just a couple flaws in your system, which I feel you set up to favor the 95' cornhuskers. #1 The rankings. You put "final AP polls". But, what about a team who plays a #16 team and kills them badly by like 40 points and its the last game of the year, they drop from the rankings and never get back?? Now instead of getting 120 points, you get 40 points. Or lets say they win their bowl game and get back to like #23, now you get 80...but still lose 40 points, and the only reason for the loss in points is because YOU beat them, so in reality you hurt yourself in your system! Now the same goes for a #5 team, you beat them by 30 points = 150 points. But beat a #6 by 30 points = 120 points. Thats a 30 point difference...but should it really be?? #5 and #6 are virtually the same! Same for a 15 v. 16 or 19 v. 20 or (3 v. 6...just ask alabama in 2008) The point system you have favors nebraska in 1995! Th

consistantly in the top 25 but did not finish in the top 25 at seasons end (Michigan State, USC, BYU, and Stanford)! 95' Nebraska played 3 top 10's in the reg. season, but never played another opponent that was ranked even for 1 week the entire season in their other 8 games...they also played a non FBS school in "pacific"! With all of that being said, I think in the 1990's...there were 4 teams that I regard as the best of the best in that decade! 93'ND, 95' Nebraska, 93' FSU, and 94' PSU. In a game, I would take 93' ND over all of them. But, I think any of these 4 could beat each other on any given day! They were all great...really really tough to say who is the greatest! Especially since your systems winner is only the winner because of ran up scores...! But I take nothing away from that team, they were great! Now look at the 2000's....there are 2 teams and thats it...2001 Miami, and 2004 USC...I would take either of these teams in a HEARTBEAT over any of those greats from th
