In the last year or so, there have been horror stories circulating about Myspace.com - horrid tales of people being stalked, kidnapped and even murdered, and all stemming from the wrong people seeing their Myspace.com profiles.

There may or may not be truth to those accounts. But rumors spread like wildfire and raised the awareness of what people were putting on their profiles.

Myspace.com was created to be a way to network and stay in contact with friends. It's successful at that and shouldn't be dismissed out of fear. However, there are some rules that should be followed when you create your profile to keep you safe.

1. Don't post your full name. Some people are tempted to post their full name. It makes it easy for old friends to contact them. All it takes is a quick search of the name and their profile pops up. A name search can help you find current friends, too. Thew bad thing is not everyone uses it for harmless purposes. If someone is looking specifically for you, your name will be the first thing they use to find you. It's ok to use your first name. Just don't post that last name.

2. Don't post your Contact information. Most people know that you don't post your address on the Internet. But some of those people think that posting a phone number is all right. If it's a home phone number, all it takes is a reverse telephone search to get your address. It's okay to post an email address as long as it doesn't contain any pertinent contact info such as your full name.

3. Don't post where you work. Seems harmless, but you are going to be there on a regular basis. That's why it may be dangerous to post your employment info - especially if it is a small company that isn't got a lot of security. There have been some reports of some people allegedly finding out where a person (especially a female) works and then stalking them at their workplace. There's no need to add any extra stress to going to work by posting it on the Internet.
