Barack Obama was on Hardball recently and was asked a hypothetical question by host Chris Matthews. President Obama gets the 3 AM phone call and is informed that two commercial airliners have been hijacked and are headed for the Capitol. What does he do?Obama hummed and hawed a little about answering a hypothetical question. But pressed by Matthews, he finally gave a response. It was chilling to say the least.
''Here's the important thing about that 3:00 a.m. phone call. What you want is somebody who is, first of all, going to get all the facts and gather up good intelligence. The second thing you want is somebody who is able to analyze the situation, the costs and benefits of action.
"We want somebody who is going to be decisive,'' he said. "And I won't hesitate to strike against somebody who would do us harm, if that's what is required."
The costs and benefits of action? There are two commercial airliners headed for the Capitol. If 9/11 is any guide to what is likely to happen, they will impact in minutes. There is no time to "to get all the facts and gather up good intelligence" not to mention having a meeting to "analyze the situation, the costs and benefits of action." A decision must be made immediately to scramble jets to shoot down the airliners. There is no time for dithering.
And, by the way, the Secret Service is likely dragging President Obama, Ms. Obama, and the two little girls to the White House bunker. There is lots of yelling, screaming, and demands to know what is going on.
What does Obama do?
Alright, under President Obama, the Capitol is now a smoking ruin. Obama has waited too long. While Obama was trying to get his advisors to give him options, the airliners impacted and brought the entire building down. Now what does President Obama do?
It looks like that he won't "won't hesitate to strike against somebody who would do us harm, if that's what is required."
If that's what is required?
