Randi Rhodes' Suspension and the State of Left-Wing Radio

Effective immediately, Randi Rhodes is off the air. After a lengthy diatribe against Hillary Clinton (among others), Randi Rhodes has been suspended, according to FOXNews. During the course of a March 22 performance, Rhodes

repeatedly used foul language to describe the presidential candidate. Air America, her broadcasting station, reports that they do not condone this sort of language, although they are known, and should be known, as a place of enlightened liberal dialogue.

Air America has suffered greatly since Al Franken left and left-wing talk radio was struggling even before that. To be frank, left-wing radio has been characterized as too nice, too low-key to be interesting, in a world where hard-hitting political fights have taken the stage. Hardball makes more interesting television. Left-wing shows typically try not to anger any particular group, sometimes to the point of sounding too calm and too boring for the average listener. Hosts like Stephanie Miller sprinkle political discussions in among less dangerous topics, like entertainment or, in Miller's case specifically, grand doses of fart jokes.

Realizing this, liberal radio seems to have begun trying to get more hard-hitting discussions going. Ed Schultz ("Where America Comes to Talk") opens up his radio show to huge varieties of listeners from all political backgrounds, though the show itself has a determinedly liberal slant. Schultz himself is a self-professed "leftie," though he is considerably more moderate than others who claim that title, as anyone who has heard a discussion by him regarding gun laws can vouch.

Seemingly, Rhodes was hired to spice things up. A liberal with a vendetta, she says the things that liberal hosts tend to avoid, often in frank and blunt language. Her recent comments take that one step farther, but her past shows demonstrate that she has strong opinions and is not afraid to articulate them.

What is the situation concerning the job status of Stephanie Miller? While I've heard a bit about her, I've only had the opportunity to listen to her show once and thought it was great. Any chance of her replacing Randi Rhoades? Ideally, I'd like to see Mike Malloy step into that time slot, but I suppose that idea would get nowhere with Air America.

I'm intrigued as to how people know what words I use IRL. Personally, I think what she did was totally out of line. I think she is out of line most of the time. I like to think the lefties are a bit better than that.

I think Randi is #1 enemy to the Democratic party - she is so polarizing, pro-Obama, toxic and a useless piece of skin. I used to love her but now I cant stand listening to her bitter rants. I am glad she is gone, hopefully we can ge some one interesting to listen to.

Right wing radio does better because right wing radio stations put on right wing ass wipes. If the media, as most right wing ass wipes contend is liberal, then why would the liberal networks put on right wing ass wipes instead of liberals. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. AND what kinda crap is the statement "she used VULGAR words" what are you a baby ??? i bet you use words like that all the time and i bet you use even more vulgar words like the "n word" and the "f word (for gay) so don't get all self-righteous. And you know what's really vulgar sending thousands of americans to die for oil...... thats vulgar

Although I think most right-wing pundits (talk show or not) are ignorant infotainment blowhard hacks, I have to be fair here (where they are not) and say that they do occassionally suffer for going over the line. Famously, Ann Coulter did get fired from her column for the "invade Moslem countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity" comment. There are other examples. This whole thing seems to be pretty much in line with that, so the extraordinary thing is not that she was suspended; it is that she even said those things in the first place. Generally speaking, progressive pundits aren't knuckle-dragging neaderthals like the right-wingnuts are.
