To buy antiques - or to sell them - the first thing you need to learn is how to tell an authentic antique from a reproduction.

You need to learn this from the experts. You should buy books on the subject. You should go to museums and antique dealers and learn from them. They are the experts to give you advise on telling the different. You can also hire appraises.

You don't have to be an expert yourself to buy antiques, but you need to have an expert as an appraiser and/or a consultant. You can find these consultants online, on TV shows, in books, or with the recommendations of antiques dealers.

Learn the types of antiques and the styles. Interested in period pieces or national styles, then learn how to identify these period pieces and national styles of antiques. Learn the styles and periods of French antiques, Chinese antiques, American antiques. You can become a general buyer of antiques and/or specialize in certain types of antiques. Antique jewelry, antique furniture, antique toys? Again, you can specialize further? Chinese antique toys?

Or, let's say if you want to buy Ming vases and can afford them, then certainly you need to know how to identify Ming vases.

Don't know whether I've come to the right website .. I'm looking for a speaker at an April 2008 luncheon benefiting the Talbot County (MD) Mental Health Association. The topic would be buying antiques at auction. The event is part of their 15th annual Antiques Show & Sale and will be held at the Art Academy Museum in historic Easton, MD. There would be ample opportunity for a book signing ... can you help?
