Gardening can be a very rewarding hobby. It is not just about growing food. It is about communing with nature and working with the plants and soil to produce quality fruits and vegetables. When spring time comes around, the avid gardener begins to anticipate working in the garden. This is the time to begin to get the garden spot ready for planting. There are many things that need to be done well before the planting begins. The first thing to do is to decide how many of each type of plant is needed. This will help determine the number of rows needed. It also will let the gardener plant for the space needed between rows. Each different type of plant needs a different amount of room to spread out.
It is also important to decide if you want to plant seeds or seedling plants. You can get either of these at your local gardening store. Seeds will take more time to bear edible vegetables. If you are going to plant seeds, you may want to get an earlier start.
After the gardener decides how big to make the plot, the soil needs to be turned. This will loosen the ground, which helps the plants develop a solid root base. Roots can grow and expand more easily through soil that is loose and not packed down solid. Whether it is done with a tiller or by hand, the soil should be turned at least three times, more is better.
While turning the soil, fertilizer can be added. This will ensure that the fertilizer is evenly distributed across the entire garden plot. Water can also be added after the soil had been turned. This will give the water time to spread evenly. Evenly moist soil helps seeds to sprout and helps seedlings begin to grow more quickly.
Before you begin to till the soil, however, there are more things to be taken into account. You need to take into account the amount of sunlight needed by each plant. You also need to be sure that there is a way to get water to the plants. Will you use water from your garden hose? Will you rely solely on rainfall? Will you carry water in some type of container? These things need to be taken into account when planning the location of your garden.
