The reading of palms (or palmistry) has been around since ancient times. It is believed that a person's character and destiny can be detected and foretold by the examination of his or her palms. Palm readers (or palmists) study every aspect of the palm. Its shape, color, and most importantly the lines upon it are all examined by palmists who consider themselves proficient in palmistry. Even though many frown upon reading palms as being something to believe in, some medical authorities have claimed that it's possible to detect signs of illness in the hands of a person long before the actual symptoms begin to be seen. This suggests that there might be some scientific basis for palmistry. When reading palms, a lot of things are observed. The shape of the hand, the shape of the fingers and fingertips and the shape of the thumb are all scrutinized. Palmists denote that a long hand indicates a meticulous and thoughtful personality, while a small one indicates intuitiveness and impetuosity. Large hands indicate a cautions character. The shapes of the palms are also examined. It seems that narrow palms suggest selfishness, while wide palms indicate those who are sociable and gentle. Even the shapes of the fingers are relevant to the palmist. Long thin ones represent an artistic temperament while crooked ones suggest untrustworthiness. Also, smooth fingers indicate alert minds. And people with so-called pointed fingers have strong sexual appetites.
For palmists, the shape of the thumb is critical. According to palmistry the lower half of the thumb refers to the reasoning power of an individual while the upper half relates to will power. A short thumb indicates a weak and inhibited character while a long one denotes high achievement and confidence. Also straight thumbs mark the independence of spirit and sincerity, but curved ones represent impulsiveness and generosity.
