The Man Known as Charlton Heston
Born John Charles Carter in 1924 was the now legendary Charlton Heston.The well known stoic actor graced our movie screens with such well known films as ,The Ten Commandments,The Omega Moan,The Greatest Show on Earth and Planet of the Apes (1968).
Enlisting the United States Army Air Force in 1944 Charlton served 2 years and quickly rose to Staff Sergeant while also attending Northwestern University where he met and married fellow student Lydia Marie Clarke.
Charlton went on to pursue a career in modeling then in acting where he portrayed such numerous and unforgettable roles.He provided just what the the avid movie goer wanted to see, a believable scene.
In 1998 Charlton was elected president of the NRA (National Rifle Association) where he was able to share his thoughts and influences about gun use and gun safety.In 2003 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Being a NRA activist Charlton voiced his rights and his political stance freely in a truly well thought out manner.
In 2002 he openly admitted a rapid progression of Alzheimer's Disease and which limited his every day functions and rumors flew in 2005 that he had been hospitalized for Pneumonia in 2005 but it was never really confirmed.Nearing the advanced stages of Alzheimer's his body had become weak and frail.He lost his battle on Saturday April 5th 2008 with his wife Lydia by his side.
Charlton will be deeply missed by his many adoring fans,colleges and his family.
