In the United States, the second Sunday of every May is set aside as a day to let your mother know you care. On that particular day, Mother's Day, children of all ages get the opportunity to show their mothers how much they appreciate everything that she does. However, many children and their fathers remain clueless on the best ways to thank Mom, especially when the budget gets tight. Here are a few suggestions for families of all budget sizes, and for children of all ages.

1) A Mom needs rest: Being a mother is a 24/7 job, and a much needed break can always be a good present. This break can come in many ways. Let Mom sleep in for an extra hour or two while Dad watches the kids. The extra sleep alone can help give Mom a new outlook. Want to add more surprise to this gift? Have the kids wake her up by bringing her breakfast in bed! Or, if Mom wakes up too early for these great surprises, why not suggest she take a nap later in the day while Dad entertains the kids?

2) I made it myself: Young children will especially love this gift-giving solution. Whether it's a necklace made from yarn and painted macaroni, a simple hand-print turned into a picture, or a something a little more complicated, Mom will appreciate gifts that were made for her by her children. Want something a little extra special? Why not buy inexpensive flowering pots, some paint, some soil, and a small potted plant, and let your child give her flowers in a pot painted by the child? Mom will be left with pretty flowers (or whatever plant you choose), a flower pot she can always keep to remind her of the special day, and the joy of hearing her child announce "I made it myself!"
