One of the tell-tale signs that summer is approaching is the announcement of the concert lineup at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh NY. For Long Islanders, this is a day that signifies that the weather is getting warmer, and we can soon hit the beach for some rockin' shows. This year's lineup thus far is more of a classic rock year. Bands that were announced months ago include Jethro Tull with Peter Frampton, Rush, and James Taylor. The first shows will start in June, and include the True Colors tour featuring Cyndi Lauper, The B52's, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Wanda Sykes, The Indigo Girls, and Rosie O'Donnell. After that, slow-hands himself graces the stage of Jones Beach once again. Eric Clapton, who was the very first rock show ever to play the beach returns for June 5th engagement. Alternative rockers R.E.M. visit along with Modest Mouse mid June, and the month will close with James Taylor and the Doobie Brothers with Chicago, who visits the beach every year.
As we enter July, you'll be able to check out acts such as John Mayer, Phil Lesh, Donna Summer(how appropriate), Rush, and Joe Cocker with The Steve Miller Band. According to http://jonesbeach.com/, Linkin Park's annual tour of Projekt Revolution will return. The bands this year include Chris Cornell, The Bravery, Ashes Divide, Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, Armor For Sleep, Street Drum Corps, and 10 years. This year's Project Revolution is more of a rock-oriented show, where many of the other tours have included a healthy mix of hip hop. Personally, Chris Cornell, Hawthorne Heights and Armor For Sleep are the highlights of the show along with of course Linkin Park. The show starts at 2pm and is figured to last all throughout the day.
July ends with a little country progressive rock, and alternative/pop-rock. Martina McBride is the first country act of the year at the beach, and she will be followed by Yes the next night. July's final show is also personally interesting. Maroon 5 brings their energetic live show, and has the Counting Crows along for the ride. This show is sure to be awesome. Special guest Sarah Barrelis is also on tour with them.
