Horrified by the "I was Raped" T-Shirt

Feminist writer and t-shirt designer Jennifer Baumgardener has created a t-shirt with the words "I was raped" splashed across the front. This t-shirt was created to get rape victims talking to each other and sharing their experiences. A special designed symbol would have been better, and

then those awful words that no raped victim wants to admit.

I was raped. What was the designer thinking as she created this t-shirt?

This t-shirt is meant to empower those who have been raped or sexuality assaulted. However, Jennifer Baumgardener missed the mark by light years, in my humble opinion. I think it will bring unwanted attention and comments to rape victims, neither of which rape victims need.

The t-shirt has the very words that most rape victims have a hard time expressing and certainly not something we wish to advertise. For the life of me, I cannot fathom why anyone would want wear this t-shirt proclaiming "I was raped."

That is like wearing a t-shirt that says, "I was the victim of a horrible crime. Come and do it to me again."

No thanks Jennifer Baumgardener. I will not be purchasing your t-shirt with the heinous words "I was raped." To do so would mean I condone the creep who raped me.

There is no way I could condone his actions or yours, Jennifer Baumgardener, as your t-shirt lacks the class one must have in this delicate situation. You surely cannot proclaim "I was raped," for if you did, you sure would not want it splash crossed your chest. Being raped is a very serious issued for those of us who have been unwillingly put in that group, and it is not anything we are proud of by any means.

By splashing "I was raped" across a t-shirt implies to me that rape is something to do for fun, and I beg to differ. Most t-shirts with sayings are meant to be funny with either images or the words. That is primarily what t-shirts are for, and advertising an event or business. There is nothing funny proclaiming I was raped, nor is it an event I wish to advertise.

i'd agree... i was molested by an older female at 6 yeas old, not exactly the same as raped, of course, and though i feel that i should not be completely silent about it, i would certainly not wear it on my sleeve, err t-shirt. Well I wish you luck in your healing process. Instead of funding projects to create t-shirts advertising rape, people should invest the money into stricter penalties for rapists and improvements for safe houses and rape crisis centers. just my opinion, of course. The Department of Justice needs to create a special department within itself that spcecifically focuses on sexual assault and rape investigations. Just like the Justice Department has the Drug Enforcement Agency for illegal narcotics investigations, it needs to have a special department for sexual assault and rape investigations. Present statistics are a s follows: An average of 1 in 6 women report being raped every year. However, seeing as how most rapes are not reported, it is estimated that actually 1 in 4 women are raped every year. And, in the rape cases that are reported, the conviction rate is about 5 or 6 percent. That is a deplorable conviction rate! I believe this low conviction rate is why many women don't report their rapes. They know there will probably be no conviction, so why bother? If men were being raped with such frequency and the conviction rate was that low, I believe most of the Justice Department's investigative resources would be geared toward bringing those rap

whoa, I said I would not wear one of these shirts that said those awful words. I admit what happened to me in the right places and not to everyone because everyone does not need to know what happened. Perhaps had you read the second page of this article you would have seen where I said another symbol would be better for the purpose. You have your opinion and I have mine but I still am big enough to say have an awesome day.

Isn't this article a case of the pot calling the kettle black? You say that people shouldn't wear a shirt stating to the world that that they have been raped, but it is OK for you to post an article to the world stating that you have been raped. Maybe you missed the symbolism of the safe. This is a secret that many people have locked away inside them. Some people need to acknolwedge what happened before they can ever move on with their life. If this is their vehicle to do so, then who are you to say that they are wrong? Maybe you need to build a bridge and get over it yourself. If we follow you advise, then we should never speak of rape, and society can just pretend that it never happens. You can keep living in denial if that's what suit you, but don't try to force others into your dysfunctional cocoon. Reading your article shows the same attitude that the rest of society has: Rape is a crime committed against women by men. Maybe if you saw men wearing wearing these
