The Real Legend Behind Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull

As with Previous Indiana Jones Films, the Latest Will Be Based on Established, Mystic Folklore

We have all seen the commercials and movie trailers for the next Indiana Jones movie that is to be released on May 22nd. It will be the fourth movie starring Harrison Ford and in all likelihood his final as that character. Ford will be 66 in July. Like the three
movies before, I am sure that this one will be just as exciting and entertaining.

The movie refers to the Crystal Skull. I remember reading about the skull years ago. It is the model of a human skull made out of clear quartz crystal. Psychic's hold that the skull is a center of psychic energy that can bring happiness and improve people's lives by just holding it. Scientifically this has never been proved. Neither has there been anything else dealing with unusual phenomenon.

One of the skulls was found in 1926 under a collapsed alter in the temple of Lubaantun by the adopted daughter of F.A. Mitchell Hedges. Her name was Anna Le Guillon. Hedges was a famous archaeologist. Lubaantun is a ruined city of Mayan civilization. The city dates from the 730's to the 890's A.D.

Anna said that she was told that the Crystal Skull was used by the Mayan High Priest to "will death." It is sometimes called the "Skull of Doom." According to wikipedia.org , the skull is about 5 inches high, 7 inches long, and 5 inches wide. The size is that of a small human skull, with near perfect detail.

In 1970, art restorer Frank Dorland submitted the skull to Hewlett Packard laboratories for study. According to Dorland, the skull features some anomalies. It was carved with total disregard of the natural crystal axis. No scratches could be found on the skull from carvings by tools. Dorland believes that the skull was first chiseled into a rough shape by the use of diamonds. The final and fine shaping was done over a period of one to three hundred years with sand.

Hewett Packard submerged the skull in Benzyl Alcohol. When they did the skull became invisible. This proved that it was pure crystal. By submerging the skull in polarized light, it also proved that the skull was made from a single left handed growing crystal. Adding to this mystery, is that Hewett Packard has never admitted or denied that this testing was done.

Very interesting article, lets hope the movie gets its facts straight, as they sometimes embellish real facts to make the movie "better"
