You'll find a lot of info online on natural ways to get rid of headaches, but why not prevent head pain before it starts? Pain is much more difficult to get rid of than it is to prevent. When serious medical problems aren't the cause of headaches, it is possible to prevent the pain before it begins, and the best ways to prevent headaches are entirely natural.

Precautionary Statement

Those suffering from recurring headaches should seek professional advice, and those experiencing a severe head pain should seek medical help immediately to rule out potentially life-threatening problems. The following natural ways to prevent headaches are not meant to treat specific medical conditions, and a professional medical doctor should be consulted if head pain persists.

Avoid Dehydration

A lack of water in the system can quickly cause dehydration, especially on hot days and during strenuous workouts, and one of the earliest signs of dehydration is a headache. To prevent headaches caused by heat or excessive sweating, drink plenty of water or beverages such as Gatorade. Have a bottle of water or a sports drink on hand if you're prone to having headaches. Maybe you aren't drinking enough water - especially if it's hot or if you're working out. Water is a natural way to replenish the body and prevent headaches.

Lessen Eye Strain

Eye strain is a major cause of head pain, especially for those who work on a computer on a daily basis. If you think headaches could be caused by eye strain, take a break from working on the computer for at least a few minutes each hour. Take the time to return calls or do something that doesn't involve visual concentration. This is a natural way to prevent eye strain and headaches, and it could help solve the problem.

Great article I suffer from awful headaches and a friend gave me a book called Aromatherapy & Herbalism by rochelle moore it is an alphabetical listing of ancient and new recipes to treat anything from acne to warts. I used the essential oils and herbal cures she recommended and showed me how to make up myself so now when i feel a headache coming on I can help myself. An amazing book.

Great info. I have to ALWAYS wear sunglasses outside. Even if you don't think it's bright, strong light will give you a golly whopper of a headache!

Great tips on prevention. If and when headache does set in, most people reach for ibuprofen (aka Advil, etc.) or acetaminophen (aka Tylenol, etc.). If you do, try adding a cup of coffee to the mix. Although these are not "natural ways", if and when the ache is there I've found the combination to work better than just a pill. Of course this is subject to the same disclaimers as your article.

Good overview, K. Reflexology supposedly helps with headaches, aromatherapy, too. I've heard feverfew is a good preventive. Balance and peace, in body and spirit, seem to the key. Peace, Michael
