I almost leapt out of my skin when I heard that David Cook would be performing Innocent by Our Lady Peace on tonight's show. Our Lady Peace is one of my absolute favorite bands of all time, and hearing that my favorite season seven American Idol contestant would be performing it was really quite exciting.

Unfortunately, I think David Cook really fell short this week. Everyone is bound to have a bad performance at some point, and this week was David's turn.

The start was awkward for me. He began with the second verse of the song, which, for me, was a not-so-pleasant surprise. Also, it seems that this particular song is out of David Cook's vocal range. He started off sounding way off pitch, and then came in and out of pitch throughout the song. He ended really strong, but I don't think that the song was salvageable at that point. He took a risk and it didn't work out.

What I think will really help David Cook this week is the ending of the song, when he shows off the "Give Back" written on his hand. Given that this is airing before tomorrow's Idol Gives Back special, I think this was a really appropriate move and will only help him get votes.

The judges echoed my sentiment. Randy didn't quite "get it", even though he's a huge fan of David Cook. Simon thought the performance was pompous, and nowhere near as good as the past few weeks. After the judges gave their critiques, you could see on David's face that he didn't feel it was his best performance, either.

In spite of this being a weak performance, I don't think David Cook's going to be hurt by his performance this week. Innocent may not have been his best song choice, but he still stayed true to his niche, and I think the audience will appreciate how genuine he is.

on last night result show, David did say that Raine Maida called him and appreciated the song choice.. who'd ever thought OLP song would be sung on Idol? i knew he'd choose them cause he really really likes Raine... and so do i !! BTW the studio version is totally AWESOME!!!

Although my initial reaction to the song was like yours, going back and listening to it again, I think it was the sound mix that was bad. David actually sounded pretty good (and not off-pitch). Listen to the studio verison of the song: It is OUTSTANDING! I might just download some OLP songs after hearing that.

His performance of the song was actually quite good. I've heard the OLP version and prefer David's voice to Raine Maida's. He probably preferred the second verse over the first because of the cancer reference. He takes a risk every week...this one just didn't pay off because he sang an obscure song to the AI demographic. Until now he has been singing obscure arrangements of well known songs. Not to mention that he looked exhausted, as did most of the other contestants...it was a busy week for them. People prefer to be wowed by a new rendition of a song they know than to be introduced to a new song. Needless to say, I didn't agree with Simon this week...and replayed the performance after his comments to see if I'd missed something. The performance seemed genuine to me. By the way, I took David's challenge last night, just for fun. None of the synonyms describe David...some describe Simon ;-) affected, aloof, assuming, arrogant, aureate, bloated, boastful, bombastic, blust

I LOVE DAVID COOK! or as we call him on david-cook.org- "OUR DAVID." He didn't blow it away this week like he has with some other songs, but he really didn't do that bad either. And actually, I really liked it and I thought his gesture to his fans was super sweet and that is why we love him so much.. he will be just fine this week, and Simon calling someone pompous? Spare me... DAVID COOK FTMFW!!!!

I'm with you. David is a star no matter what happens. He'll be lucky if he loses so he can get out on his own as soon as possible. I would buy his CDs in a heartbeat. Although I think David A is as talented, I'd be more likely to buy David C's CD because of his style.
