So you've finally convinced your company to allow you to work from home. Or maybe you are a full time entrepreneur who is self employed in your home office. Either way, it takes a focused person to be able to concentrate on getting your work done without all of the distractions at your house.Routine and consistency is the key to work at home success. You may be able to sleep a little later than you would if you had to drive to work. However, getting up at the same time every day will start your morning routine and get you ready to start work.
Although you no longer have a morning commute, a good way to start the day is to get out of the house before work. You might have to take your kids to school. You can also go to your gym, take a walk or do a quick errand in order to clear your mind and start your work routine.
Many people who work at home boast about being able to work in their pajamas. This isn't always such a good idea. You'll feel and act more professional if you dress in something other than PJ's and sweats. Pretend it's casual Friday everyday.
Another way to stay in your routine is to eat lunch at lunchtime. Even if you don't actually eat lunch, if you take your lunch hour and use it as down time or to fit in your personal tasks, you'll be able to focus on your work in the afternoon.
Multitasking while on conference calls is essential in a fast paced business environment. Thomas Edison once quipped "Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits." This is a classic time management quote and it's absolutely true. This adage can be translated into how to manage your time between projects. While waiting for one task to be completed, or if you have to wait for a response from a client, you can get started on another project.
We all work smarter in a clutter free and organized environment. Your home office should have an efficient type of filing and storage system. If you're working on a shoestring budget, yard sales are great for finding used office furniture. Don't skimp on desk accessories like a blotter, pen holder, stapler or writing utensils. They'll help you feel more professional when you're at your desk.
