Stephen A. Smith is one of the loudest, most obnoxious self-righteous sports journalists on the face of the earth. And don’t you just love him? Because for as often as he asserts his outlandish opinions and willfully rejects those of others, his excitability and enthusiasm are just an attribute that can’t go unwatched.

Stephen A. Smith is rare commodity in sports journalism. He has gone from newspaper columnist, to radio personality to television host. His demeanor and mannerisms are so popular with fans that will tune in to him on any media platform. His rise from intern to national television is something that can only be attributed to his appeal to the average fan. What is it about him specifically that makes him so fascinating to sports fans?

For starters, Stephen is loud. And people like loud people. Go back to your days in high school and think about the most popular people. They certainly were not the wallflowers who said and did nothing worthy of note. And when you think about life at work, who is the guy everybody congregates to and befriends? The guy who walks around talking to everyone and gives a loud good morning to you, or the guy who sends out a small e-mail every once in a while, asking if anyone took the stapler off his desk? Well, the second you hear Stephen’s radio entry, you know that he is one of the guys from the former group, as he gives a loud and boisterous “Holla at ya boooooooooooooy!” And being loud does not only get you noticed, but it makes you sound certain about what you are saying. So when Stephen A. says that something is fact, you believe it. Even if you think it is the most absurd thing in the world, you will believe it.

OKAY ERIC, HE IS LOUD BUT IT ONLY COMES FROM HIS PASSION FOR HIS JOB. I CAN TELL YOU ARE A HATER. THE MAN MAKES VALID POINTS ALL ACROSS THE BOARD. HE DOES NOT KNOW EVERYTHIN AND I HAVE HEARD HIM SAY NUMEROUS TIMES THAT HE WON'T COMMENT ON WHAT HE DON'T KNOW. SOUNDS LIKE HONESTY TO ME. I CAN LISTEN TO STEPHEN AND KNOW THAT HE IS PUTTING HIS ALL INTO IT. DO I HAVE TO MENTION THAT HE IS CASKET SHARP EVERY SHOW, AND HE IS CONSTANTLY ON ESPN AND I DON'T SEE THAT MANY BLACK MEN ON ESPN PUTTING THEIR OWN SPIN ON THINGS. YOU HATING ON A MAN THATS BLAZING HIS OWN TRAIL AND DOING A DAMN GOOD JOB IN THE PROCESS. HE HAS TO BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT, LOOK AT YOU HATING ON HIM AND YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE. ITS A LONG LINE OF ERIC WILLIAMS OUT THERE........AND STEPHEN LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK ON YOUR ASS!!!!!!!!!!

Stephen A. smith gets attention because people who claim to dislike him actually likes him by buying into the hype. However, its more to reporting, you have to have the personality as well a good speaking voice. So,some personalities might be more informative but some can very boring. Stephen A. Smith has the knack to grab people's attention. "He got the job for a reason"

Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me! How could a few words do anything to these very strong girls? Consider the source. What about the girl that accused the boys of rape? Duke scandal. All those black girls protesting at duke, no problem right?

You people don't understand. Sports is entertainment. That's why so many people you see involved in sports say that they have never worked a day in their lives. Sports is fun. You guys for whatever reason want to turn into the analzation of facts, numbers and spreadsheets. Sports is about heart, will, character and personality. People who play sports for a living or comment on them as their jobs, they don't want to "inform" you as Brian said, and they don't want they don't do their jobs to be "informative" as Eric said. They do their jobs to entertain, to make people have a better appreciation for the art that is spots. So if you want facts and stuff, go listen to a political debate. If you want sports, than "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

I'm with Eric on this one. I want to be informed, not entertained, by my sports reporters/analysts and Smith usually fails in that regard. And I certainly don't want to be screamed at, under any circumstance. I will give Screamin' A credit for being good on his work during the NBA draft. But otherwise give me just about anyone else on ESPN (and that's saying something, with their wealth of bad analysts!)

Well, Eric, I just think you're one of those guys who just isn't open to his brand of sports journalism. With Stephen, you either love him or you hate him. And while I'll admit that he is not the most knowledgeable about the strategy and complexity of sports outside of basketball, he does know people and he is well connected with athletes. Most of his reports and comments are based on his relationships with the athletes and his characterization of their personalities, and he is very good at doing that. But you can hate it you want, because it sounds like you're a little bit jealous.

Unfortunately, I couldn't disagree with you more. Stephen A. may be a loud jackass - and that certainly draws him plenty of attention - but if you want a someone really informative, he's not the guy I'd want to listen to. There are numerous other sports personalities who are much more knowledgeable than Stephen and won't cause you to turn down the volume half as much as he does. To put it mildly, I think Stephen A. is one of the worst sports personalities on television, radio or print and only holds the positions he does because he's a loud mouth who draws both listeners and viewers. All this clown needs is a bif fat nose and some clown shoes to complete his outfit.
