Mother's Day is coming up in less than a month, and it's time to think about what to do in celebration of your favorite mom. In my family, there are two days of the year where I balk at cooking (something I really enjoy) and insist on being treated like the queen I am. Those days are Easter and Mother's Day. Traditionally, our family is treated to a Mother's Day brunch at a local restaurant, where all can gorge on fine food. There are many places in the Detroit area where your family can go to celebrate Mother's Day in style.

A great choice for a Mother's Day brunch gathering is the Melting Pot. The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant, and this year for Mother's Day, moms can be treated to a four-course fondue dinner at one-half off. Fondue can be "fun"-do, even for small children. (Mine haven't had an accident yet, and they've participated in fondue since they were very young.) This special includes the melted cheese appetizer, available in American, Swiss, Cheddar or fiesta, a salad of your choice, entrée cooked in either oil or court bouillon, and of course, finishing with the chocolate fondue of your choice. A four-course meal normally costs $35. The Melting Pot is located at 888 West Big Beaver in Troy, and the phone number for reservations is 248-362-2221. (There are also Melting Pots located in Novi, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids.)

If you like a wonderful atmosphere that harkens back into the prime of Detroit, I would strongly recommend the Mother's Day brunch at the Whitney. Once the mansion home of lumber baron David Whitney, Jr., the Whitney now houses three floors of restaurant and cigar bar in a 21,000 square foot exquisite Romanesque structure. In many ways, having dinner in the home is worth the price, as it is architecturally stunning. My favorite area to dine is the music room. The Whitney is offering their usual Sunday brunch menu for $35. The Whitney is located at 4431 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. The phone number for reservations is 313-832-5700.
