Shedding Tears for the Yankees and What Went Wrong
I am a die hard Yankee fan and I have been following the Yankees this post season. As a Yankees fan I saw them destroy Detroit during the regular season after winning 3 out of 4 games against them. I wanted to play Detroit in the postseason over Minnesota because I did not want to face CY Young pitcher Johan Santana twice in a five game series with him having the ability to pitch games 1 and 2. I got my wish and now, I along with other Yankee fans are regretting that deeply. Like the Fox Sports announcers said, “Everyone was picking the Yankees and boy did they fall apart.
I haven’t seen a collapse like this by the Yankees since the Boston series two years ago in which they had a 3 games to 0 lead on the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees payroll was 200 million dollars and Detroit’s payroll was under 100 million dollars. All week long I listened to announcers say how this Yankee hitting lineup might be the best ever with an All Star at each position. Well, I don’t know what happened but during this series this lineup showed no signs of that whatsoever. Game 1 the Yankees did well including Derek Jeter who went 5 for 5 in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. Game 1 Wang pitched well but after that they fell apart. They lost every game after that and their lineup looked like the Chicago Cubs then the NY Yankees.
True, the tigers got great pitching from Kenny Rogers, Verlander and Bonderman. However, this was a mental letdown by everyone including manager Joe Torre. Once again, Alex Rodriguez had another disgusting post season and I think he might need to be traded. He went 1 for 14 in the post season and everyone in the lineup, even Robinson Cano who had a .340 average in the regular season was awful in the series. The Yankees did not draw walks because the Tiger pitchers did not throw balls. The Yankee hitting did not get on base and couldn’t drive in any runs. Randy Johnson show again that he cannot pitch well in a Yankee uniform and I think the Yankees knew that when they needed Jaret Wright to win a game for them in a do or die situation, they were in big situation.
