In my youth I was drawn to backpacking primarily to explore places along mountain trails that I considered beautiful and fascinating, many of which I could not have done in any other way except by trekking. I was able to hike deeper into remote areas, away from people and their effects. It was a soul searching experience that is one of the memories of my younger years.

At first my hiking was limited to the Appalachian Trial in the eastern part of the States, depending on my vacation time I had from studies. I became a member in the Appalachian Mountain Club and together we trekked through the trails enjoying the hikes and the wonderful scenery along the natural paths. I joined them in them in their conservation efforts in the correct use of the mountains, rivers and trails in the Appalachian region. The treks along the trails were above all a spiritual reunion with gifts of nature.

Later, when time and strength permitted, I participated in hiking along many trails in the country together with one of the hiking groups of the American Hiking Society (www.americanhiking.org). My wife and my children were excellent companions along the routes and together we had excellent vacations. There were no favorites as all had scenic wonders, well-marked routes and various amenities.

One might ask what is backpacking. In simple words backpacking is when an individual packs his or her gear into a knapsack and hits the trail. This gear must include food, a canteen of water, and a compact folding tent. A hiker's trip includes at least one overnight stay in the wilderness (otherwise it is a day hike). Many backpacking trips last just for a long weekend, but for some enthusiasts a trek can last longer depending on their requirements.

Now why do people backpack? People are drawn to backpacking primarily for recreation and the experience in being in the outdoors. Backpacking presents more advantages besides the enjoyment of a hike along the trails. Many weekend or longer trips cover routes that could be hiked in a single day, but people choose to backpack them anyway, for the experience of staying overnight.

Mr. Rubin; you're most definitely one of my favorite writers. This particular piece happens to also be one of my favorites. Besides; imagine having to comment on every single work, by hundreds of writers. Just because I'm not commenting every single time I read one of your magnificent works, doesn't mean I'm not reading you. And by saying that you'll 'complain about my methods' :(firstly) Are you referencing the interviews I proudly invite people to, on my web-form, that has brought, you alone, at least 115 new faces/pv?; (secondly) Some pieces just aren't for me and if I decide not to read one it sure doesn't seem to warrant a threat. But anyway...please make sure that all the links come back to my page. And I thank you, good sir.
