In a specially scheduled Thursday elimination, Michael Johns was given the boot on American Idol. Joining him in the bottom two were Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado. Ryan Seacrest was especially cruel this time around. Seacrest pointed out that last year on Idol Gives Back, no one was eliminated (giving Michael Johns and the American Idol audience false hope). "This year, we're going to say good bye to Michael Johns." Way to twist the knife, Seacrest!

Who should have gone instead of Michael Johns?

Carly Smithson: Known for daring fashion statements and flair for the dramatic, Carly Smithson took on Queen's The Show Must Go On. While her vocals were strong, it wasn't her best performance on American Idol. The performance came across as angry and shouting, not an ideal mood for Inspiration Week. However, as soon as Simon Cowell told Carly she was "in danger" this week, I knew she would be safe. The best way to mobilize a fan base is to convince the fans that their contestant is in danger. Jasmine Trias? Scott Savol?

Syesha Mercado: With her big hair and personality, Syesha Mercado is another polarizing contestant on American Idol. Syesha was panned by Randy and Simon after singing Fantasia's I Believe. While I think she was vocally stronger than Fantasia, Fantasia brought a unique signature style that was missing in Syesha's performance.

Kristy Lee Cook: Kristy may be the Carmen Rasmussen of this season--a pretty, wholesome blonde with a country vibe who overstays her welcome on American Idol. This week Kristy Lee Cook took on Martina McBride's Anyway. It was a decent rendition, but after weeks of lackluster performances on American Idol, I thought her time was up. Yet Simon was right in pointing out that Kristy picked the right song to appeal to her American Idol demographic.

What went wrong with Michael Johns on American Idol?

Performance Order: Michael Johns sang first this week. This is often the kiss of death on American Idol. Audiences usually remember the last performances of the night. The first performers on American Idol tend to get lost in the shuffle.

Takeaways
  • Ryan Seacrest gave Michael Johns false hope before eliminating him.
  • Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado, and Kristy Lee Cook seemed in danger of elimination this week.
  • Ryan Seacrest did not reveal the bottom two on American Idol this week.

I was out of town when it happened, but caught a glimpse of the elimination show on a hotel TV, just in time to see Michael eliminated! Total shock - him and David Cook were my favorites! I was already thinking "FIX"! like when Constantine was eliminated in Season 4 without ever being in the bottom before. But when I got home and watched my Tuesday tape - I have to agree with Tina - to be the first one out is a death kiss, and it wasn't his best. Kristie Lee finally gave a really good performance, but is still unmemorable compared to some others. Brooke was horrible this week & belonged in the bottom with Carly. Syesha was pretty good, and didn't deserve it. But Michael has a great career ahead of him anyway. I read one article where he is already getting "kudos, don't worry" from people like Keith Urban He will do fine. Sometimes I think they let people go early who may already have other offers.

It's alright, Seacrest is a huge tool. I don't watch Idol (I gave up after Fantasia won season 3), but Seacrest is one of the reasons I don't return to the show. I have never liked him. Oh well.

I liked him but wasn't surprised, he was getting kind of boring. I can't explain it. I thinkl David Cook will go all the way.

Yeah, I was shocked to see him go this early in the competition. Michael was one of my favorites. I agree with your assessment but I still think it sucks! I feel pretty confident that he'll be getting a recording contract soon anyway.

Of course I am bummed by this. I saw it on replay and Seacrest was a complete toad. Not to worry. I really like his version of Aerosmith's song, that was terrific

I've talked to so many people who were shocked by his elimination. I didn't have time to keep up with every move on American Idol but I sure got informed by those who did - and your article mirrors their assessment.
