Women, Aging and Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence can occur in women of nearly any age. I am in my early forties and suffer from it. There are many reasons why urinary incontinence happens - from having given birth to lifting heavy objects for work - and the age range varies so greatly because bladders fall at different ages for different women.
You might be thinking that I am experiencing urinary incontinence at an excessively young age. Truly middle-aged women get this embarrassing problem more often than you may guess, but so do younger women in their thirties.
I was a certified nurse's aide for many years and all that lifting and lugging had an effect on my body, eventually causing urinary incontinence. Women who do any heavy lifting on a routine basis need to be aware that their bladders may fall as a result. When your bladder falls, that is when you experience urinary incontinence.
My doctor told me that pregnancy might also make your bladder fall. I have had three full-term pregnancies.
In my case, all of these factors combined lead to my bladder falling long before it was supposed to, giving me urinary incontinence.
When you have urinary incontinence, you wear pads for a long time and pray you do not have an accident, but pads get very uncomfortable, as most women already know. Because I worked in the medical field, I knew just what to do when I realized I had urinary incontinence: I got a bladder tuck. A simple bladder tuck stitches the bladder back into the correct position and typically brings urinary incontinence to an end.
If you are experiencing bladder incontinence, I urge you to talk with your doctor. A gynecologist, an urologist or an urogynecologist can all help a woman of any age get the help she needs with urinary incontinence. There is no need for embarrassment.
