The basis for this show's still being on the air should be obvious. In addition to being one of the more respected reality shows to grace television since the first episode of MTV's "Real World", the CW's "America's Next Top Model" (ANTM) has succeeded in getting dozens of pretty faces on the map. But ANTM (premiering in 2003) is as much an entertaining television program as it is a 'modeling camp' of sorts. Here are a few of my personal reasons for tuning in to every single episode. Perhaps others will agree:

1- The Guest Judges: Before Janice Dickinson was ousted from the show's judges' panel, she made more of a name for herself as ANTM's most controversial and outspoken celebrity judge. Her live-and-direct anecdotes about the ugly side of the modeling industry were simply impossible to tear your eyes away from. Nigel Barker, a constant figure on the show is also perhaps the dreamiest, yet most tolerable judge on the panel. His frank opinions are often accurate, yet diplomatic. Former model Twiggy's presence (in the absence of "Duchess Dickinson") also represents a certain caliber of opinion. Being that she's modeled in hundreds of couture designs certainly makes her an expert. She's also aging quite gracefully.

2- The models are not "drop-dead" gorgeous. : Though beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, it should be said that ANTM does not appear to go for the "obvious" beauty all the time. This means that cashiers, waitresses, teachers, wives, and even "Bible Thumpers" all have runway potential. This is extremely encouraging to those of us who just consider ourselves "average looking." Let it also be said that America's Next Top Model has not shunned the larger honies of the world. Though few of the plus-sized contestants have gotten much farther than Cycle 3's Toccara Jones, it is undeniably refreshing to see this type of exquisiteness represented so well in mainstream media. There are the contestants whose beauty would knock one over the head. But ANTM challenges these ladies by forcing them to address the inner qualities which will ultimately help them to succeed.
