Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee is a type of game that you can get excited about when you first start playing. Controlling all of the coolest and favorite monsters from the Godzilla movies, these creatures smashing into each other, the cities crumbling around them, is simply an experience to remember. The graphics are pretty good, and the sense of size is great; you really feel like you are controlling these lumbering monsters.

The fighting consists of three different buttons to attack, a block button, and another to have your monster run faster. The attacks feel very slow, and this is expected because of the immense size of these beasts. However, when you are playing multiplayer, problems arise; it is very hard to use finesse when there are three other creatures trying to kill you, so mashing the buttons works the best most of the time. The fighting system is one of the best parts of this game, although it isn't that great compared to some other fighters.

Once that initial excitement subsides, however, only a small selection of different modes and creatures remain in its place. Other than the normal fighting selections (versus, multiplayer, story mode), the only other mode would be Destruction; getting points for wrecking and leveling one of the game's seven cities. The cities are decent in design and looks, but they become too small when you are playing with four players. Also, there is only 3 characters unlocked in the beginning of the game, and you have to gain the rest by completing the boring one-player missions.

Overall, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee is a good rental if you are having a party with your friends. But if you are looking for a fighting game to buy, there are plenty of other, better options available out there.

Takeaways
  • Good selection of Godzilla characters
  • Great for four player battles
  • Basic, easy controls
